  6 Questions
Q: I have been looking at ST30 DLE 414cc and ST# DLE 342cc. Which one is better? Looks like prices are the same $1,599.99.

Thanks

by Toshimi Shimizu from Minnesota on August 28, 2013

A: Toshimi,

The real difference is in the engine manufacturer and size. Briggs and Stratton has a much longer proven track record. LCT has not been around as long but I am not aware of any problems with their engines either. There is a minor difference in tire size as well.

921029 414cc - Ariens engine made by LCT, engine size 414cc, tires 16x5

921018 342cc - Briggs and Stratton engine size 342cc, tires 15x5

Q: What does it mean by a two stage snow blower compare to a single stage one?
by Dave Y from Connecticut on February 09, 2013

A: Dave - In very basic terms, single-stage snow blowers only throw the
snow once. A gas-powered engine spins an auger that scoops up the snow and throws it out the chute. Two-stage snow blowers, on the other hand, throw the
snow twice. First, a metal auger scoops up the snow and ice. Then, a high-speed impeller throws it out through the discharge chute.

by Joe, Product Expert

Q: Does this have the unlock/lock hub?
by David from Massachusetts on March 01, 2012

A: This unit would not, it uses what Ariens calls auto traction drive. The snow blower would automatically slow one wheel while the other stays power in order to turn. It would be about the same type of option as the trigger system you would find on other snow blowers, but Ariens does not use triggers.
by Joe, Product Expert

Q: I have a moderate slope to paved drive and 200 feet of gravel after that. Would I be better off w tracked version? Thx
by Ralph from Michigan on September 28, 2011

A: If it is a moderate slope, you would most likely be fine with wheels, but this is more like a touch and feel sort of thing. If you can get slippery conditions you can have issues with traction if the slope is too steep, but if it is gradual you would most likely be fine.
by Joe, Product Expert

Q: The Ariens Platinum ST30DLE (30") 342cc Two-Stage Snow Blower specs states that the gear case is cast iron but if you click on the product demo it states that the gear case is aluminum.
Question: Which is it?

by David Marteny from Virginia on August 28, 2011

A: David - the product demo's on our web site are from 2010. Ariens is building all of their 2011 2-stage models with the heavy-duty cast iron gear case. The ST30DLE has a cast iron gear case.
by Joe, Product Expert

Q: how well will this unit work on a steep gravel drieway. Ariens Platinum ST30DLE. Thank you.
by Jerry Bartle from North Carolina on August 06, 2011

A: This is going to depend on how slippery it is going to get. Wheeled units are great on level ground, but when you start to get steep slopes, you will start to run into a loss of traction and the wheels will just spin. Now the answer typically to slippage is chains, but with new Ariens models, the wheels have deep tread and the chains just sit inbetween the tread and don't really work.

Thanks,

Excellent Snowthrower
This is a very good machine.- it has a big engine.

The negatives are that it's tricky to set up and get the chute connected properly. It took about 2 hours and a degree of being handy.

It's also like driving a stick shift, with lots of things to adjust such as snow throw height and speed, etc. You will find yourself looking at the panel a lot. Another con is that it's very heavy- I would guess 150 pounds. It is self propelled but you want to pull it back sometimes because it's faster... more

Disappointed!
Disappointed!

We bought this to replace our 10 year old big box store, which has given years of trouble free service. After reading all the great reviews I bought the Platinum 30. We live up in the mountain of Yosemite and have to snow blow maybe 10 times a winter.
We have a long driveway which tends to have some gravel rocks on it.
The quality looks great and it started first pull out of the crate. It runs strong and mows right through our deep wet Sierra Snow. The hand warmers are a big... more

Nom Nom Nom
I bought this in Aug 2012 to replace an ancient 24" Ariens snow blower that more than delivered on quality over the years. Now being March 2013, it's gotten plenty of use here in North Eastern Massachusetts. With a blizzard (36" of snow) and a few storms of 20"-24", it just kept going and going. It had no problem handling a full load of snow, both light & fluffy and wet & heavy. Only drawback was that with the 21" height, and 36" of snow, some goes over the... more

I am the Maintenance Supervisor of a church and we use this to clear all of our sidewalks. I was using a John Deere 724 before and now moved up to this 30'' Ariens. I am very impresed, the engine is the same as John Deere and Toro, all Briggs engines. So why pay more for a name and not get the options. This snow blower has everything you need to clear lots of snow. I just cleared over 1000' of sidewalks with 7" of wet snow and no problems. This will really throw the snow too. The... more

Outstanding Machine
I purchased this snow blower last summer on sale. Been sitting in the garage idle until a few weeks ago, but then we received a good 20 inch storm. It started on the first crank and off I went. It plowed right through with no drop in engine power. It was very cold and the snow was light and fluffy. It blew the snow at least 50 feet out of the way. Since then I have used it to clear 3 more storms. The snow was higher in moisture and much heavier still plenty of power to move it, but only threw... more

Bring On The Snow!!
So far, so good- all I need is snow. I just got the snow blower yesterday, put gas in oil in it, and it fired right up with the electric start immediately.

I was really surprised at how quiet it was at full throttle. I can't wait to blow snow, this machine seems very solid.

Snow Blowers Direct was very easy to order from. I placed the order on Thursday and I had it on Monday.

One Of My Best Buys
The machine with a 16.5 Briggs & Stratton I/C engine really throws snow. The machine starts on first pull just like a Honda or Kawasaki engine. The price was well below cost of the local Mega Hardware chains. Was delivered curbside professionally and without any issues. Assembly was not difficult. I've used family member machines such as MTD and Troy Built and this continues to be my choice if machines to use.

No Comparison
Well, after Superstorm Sandy we were greeted with a Nor'easter that dumped 8" of heavy wet snow.

The Ariens platinum 30" started first pull, it was easy to operate, and the hand warmers were great, since I forgot my gloves.

The only problem I had was it needs weight on the front to hold it down, but that was probably because of how heavy the snow was.

I would highly recommend this snow blower- and I'm not commenting on what it replaced, because there is no comparison.

This Thing Is A Beast!
This snow blower came in a crate and was in excellent condition upon arrival. Shipping was fast too. Assembly was not difficult as long as you read through the instructions fully first.

We've had a few medium snow falls of 6 to 7 inches, so we haven't really tested it on the deep stuff yet, but it throws snow 50 feet in any trajectory you want with ease.

It is also easy to maneuver after a small learning curve....it just takes a minute to get used to all of the controls. The heated... more

The Best Blower I Have Had
I have a very large driveway, and this snow blower does the job. We just had a snowstorm so I had a chance to try it out.

I think that this snow blower may be the best one I have had. I have had a few different brands, but this is my first Ariens.

I didn't have to wait long to receive it, and it arrived in good shape with no problems.

Ariens Power Cord Is Just A Regular Extention Cord
After purchasing my Ariens snow blower I found out that although it was an electric start model, it didn't include the power cord. Seemed pretty cheap to me. So I called Snow Blowers Direct and sure enough, my brand new snow blower would soon arrive without a power cord. I rationalized that I'd saved hundreds on the snow blower by purchasing from Snow Blowers Direct so I should have expected some hidden costs. So, I ordered it and it quickly arrived at my house.

The machine seems to be built well and rugged. When I first uncrated the unit. I was treated to a series of scratches all over the front housing. Not enough to deal with returning the unit, just aggravating after just spending over $1500 on a new machine. I elected to send a check for payment to receive a discount for not using my credit card. This added almost two weeks to the shipping date. The mail should have only taken three days and an electronic clearing of my check at the bank should have only added a day. Excellent Machine
This is one good machine. In this day of mediocrity (or often times less), it is nice to find a well made, solid machine that actually works the way it is supposed to work. Other than a couple nuts that vibrated loose from operation (easily fixed with some blue loctite), and the possible slight exaggeration of "throws snow 50 feet" (we observed 40 feet), this is a keeper. Since I recently had rotator cuff surgery, I decided to buy a good snow blower that my wife could operate. My... more

An easy set-up even without reading the assembly book. It was out of the box and running in 20 minutes. And it started on the first pull too. Of course I had to try out the electric start feature and it was even faster. I really like the way the discharge chute is firmly locked in position but it still is very easy to swing left or right in a flash. This is a quality piece of machinery. Solid and firm. Platinum 30
I did about a years worth of research looking at the pros and cons of other brands such as Troy-Bilt, Toro, John Deere, Husqvarna, Craftsman, and Honda. Ariens won hands down - 1st for their known snow performance and 2nd for the features and price. Once I narrowed it down to Ariens I then debated between the Pro Series and Platinum models, I went for the Platinum 30 since it has many features of the Pro Series at a more reasonable price. It is a lot heavier than my old snow blower - a 10hp... more

A Well Built Snow Blower
The Ariens 921018 snow blower is built solid of all steel. No composite or plastic. I have used it three times and am delighted with the ease of handling, especially when turning. The six forward speeds are handy for any depth of snow. One of the snow storms was half ice and very heavy and this snow blower handled it with ease. I purchased this snowblower in September, but put off writing this review until I had a chance to use it. Machine was shipped quickly, and delivered quickly. The driver brought it into the garage on a pallet jack. I spent about a half hour on simple assembly - attaching the chute and securing the handles. Then I waited for snow.

This is an AWESOME snowblower!!! Living on the IL & WI border we get some of the most wet and heavy snow that most snowblowers can handle.

I originally bought a small 5.5hp snowblower from a bigbox store and it could not push the heavy wet snow that I see every year. This Ariens throws snow EFFORTLESSLY and Snow Blowers Direct shipped to my home super fast.

This is an update of my January 27 review. Since then we have had every imaginable type of snow--light powder to slush.

I have 5 ways of dealing with snow: shovel (ugh), snowblower, Yamaha 700 ATV with plow, '72 International truck with 8' plow, and a large skid-steer.

Every winter I use them all (well, this was the first year for a snowblower). I was not surprised to find that the blower replaced all 6 different shovels in almost every circumstance, but I was surprised that for wet... more

I ordered an Ariens 30 Deluxe blower from Snowblowers Direct recently. I was nervous purchasing this on-line but did my homework and decided to do it.

When you live in upstate New York, you have two types of snow. The first is a steady snow fall on and off for about five months starting around Christmas time.

The second type of snow is the crusty residue that the plow leaves in the bottom half of the driveway. My old snow blower handled the first type pretty well but had a rough time after the plow went by. It would bog out and almost stop when it reached that spot.

My new Ariens Platinum is a joy to operate. Its power is enough to... more

What a snow blower. I had purchased a JD built by Ariens back in 1991, it to was a very sound unit.

I've already used my new snow blower 8 times in 20 days and it's not even Winter yet! Where I live, when the wind blows, I have to snow blow. I researched several of the better rated snow throwers but finally decided on the Ariens. This model had everything I wanted and then some. When it arrived I was not disappointed. The delivery operator placed it right in my garage and had me open the carton to make sure there was no damage to the snow thrower before he left. The set up was relatively easy. I had a minor... more

Where Is The Snow?
My totally awesome Ariens snow blower was delivered on the day it was promised. The lift gate service was outstanding, resulting in my machine being delivered into my garage. The driver and I removed the cardboard to inspect the unit and it was flawless. All the packing was in place, all the parts were there, and not a scratch was to be seen!

I doubt if the driver was even back in his truck before the assembly process was well under way. Everything fit perfectly. All the parts were... more

Least Snowfall In Recent History
The purchase of a tremendous snow blower has to this point been the best insurance against getting any significant snowfall. We have not (yet) had an opportunity to try its potential.

Of course this is no reflection on PED - my experience with dealing with PED has been relatively satisfactory. There was some miscommunication regarding delivery instructions - but we have worked that all out.

I would not hesitate to consider PED in any future power equipment purchases.

Mixed First Impression
Maybe, I'm just in a bad mood having spent two hours outside in the cold assembling it.

I'm not mechanically gifted, but not a dud either. I'm sure it could be done in far less time the second time, but for first-timers, the manual is not as clear as it should be.

Some steps had to be skipped as some parts were already assembled at the factory, so I was scratching my head at times trying to figure out what the instructions were telling me to do, when it had already been done. Some... more

Ariens St30dle
I have not had a chance to use the snow blower yet.

The ST30DLE was received in good condition about 1 week after the order was placed. I purchased lift gate service and the driver used a pallet jack to deliver the unit to my garage, pulling the jack over my gravel driveway without any problem.

Assembly was straight forward. The manual needs to be carefully read since it is written to cover several models. It would be better if Ariens wrote manuals to be specific to one model.

I'm a 63 year old woman, and the directions for assembly are so confusing, I don't know if I will have it together for the first snow. You should have a step by step video. I'm at my wits end. If and when I get it together and get to use it...I'll give a review of the performance.

WOW! everything was so much more then I hoped for. The machine was shipped the day after I ordered it.

The $50.00 for lift gate service was well worth it. The delivery driver not only off loaded the Blower from the truck, he even set it into the garage.

I had it up and running that night after work. Still waiting on some snow to try it out. I would recommend "PED" to any one.

Snowblowers Direct is an excellent company to deal with, product shipped out as told and was delivered on time.
The Ariens model 921018 is a super machine, the only problem is the directions on how to assemble the chute, it is very vague. They should use photo instructions.

Machine Seems Good, But Disappointed In Condition Received
We purchased this unit because we thought Ariens meant quality. When we received the package, some bolts were loose, some undone and off in the crate floating around. The chute line does not come fully assembled but it is easy to hook up if the factory had actually set it in place properly!

We fumbled around trying to hook up the chute cable, until we realized that the factory attached the wrong end to the chute lever. We had to reassemble that, and after that it's turn it on and go right?... more

My "insurance Policy"
Quick explanation:
By purchasing my new snow blower, I have assured that there will be no measurable snow in our area for the next 1 to 3 years.

My Ariens Deluxe Platinum Snow Blower arrived and was delivered by a very polite and helpful driver. It was larger than I thought it would be, but am very pleased. It assembled in about one hour. We have had no measurable snow, so I have not had the pleasure of 'testing' it yet. It started up on the first pull. (I have not had a chance/need to... more

My smaller Ariens (650?) did the job for the first snow fall of close to two feet of new snow, fluffy and not wet,
but I did struggle to get the job done. My son and wife also live here in Chester and only had a shovel.

I ordered my Ariens Deluxe Platinum two stage snow blower on November 30, 2010. I ordered it to be delivered by lift truck. It arrived a couple of days later. I had no problems assembling it. I used to look out of the window and say "Oh no, Oh no, off to push snow I go". Now I look out and say "Let it snow, let it snow for out I go to blow". Yesterday (February 2, 2011) we had around a foot of snow and needless to say, I didn't mind at all.

Let It Snow
This season, 2010-2011, we've had record snow fall and it's not over yet. I own a smaller snow blower and have gotten by with it for several years. This year I decided to upgrade.

This machine is very good. It has plenty of power, runs smooth and is quieter than my smaller machine. When going down the driveway, it easily throws the snow over and clear of the cars. I run the machine at about half throttle with no problems.

This is an excellent machine and would recommend it to anyone.... more

Big Machines
These are big machines, and can easily throw snow 50' or more. They lack good traction when snow is as big as the mouth of the machine. Reverse speeds are too slow, forward speeds are good.

These are commercial grade but the shoot directional cabling is flimsy for a machine this size. Overall it does a good job but beats you up because of the poor traction.

Could Use A Lower Gear
The snow blower is okay but would not buy this product again.

Here in Wisconsin we have some heavy snow and light. The snow plows like to leave the big chunks at the end of the driveway and for this reason I wish the thing had 1 gear lower to put in because of that.

Another problem that I have encountered is that the welds on the thing are starting to rust, they should of cleaned their welds before painting. I guess its all about productivity and not quality.

The Tires Do Not Work On Gravel As Well As The Rep Said (hold)
The snow blowing part is great. The tires are not.

The rep said the tires would work on a gravel driveway. They spin more than they should. We had to back up and go forward while shimming the blower with a lot more muscle than should have been needed.

I should have listened to my own intuition and bought the one with tracks.

Last Snow Blower Left Me Stranded.
In December 09 we got about 8 inches of snow overnight. I fired up the old snowblower I owned and started doing my thing. It was a 7 horse, 24" two-stage a bit over 10 years old. I picked up an extension cord with it. The cord wrapped around the auger and stopped the motor.

Not thinking anything of it I yanked out the cord and restarted it. It would move but not blow any snow. "Shear pins" I thought, but they were fine. Just then I noticed that the differential had blown... more

Ariens 342 Cc 30"path Platinum Deluxe
Well, Snow Blowers Direct has excellent customer service. I did research before my purchase and they were very helpful.

I ordered my snow blower on a Thursday and received it the following Tuesday which I was very pleased with. I ordered the lift gate service and the truck driver, with a pallet jack, placed the unit right into my garage.

Assembly of the unit went well. I started it and let it run at a few different idle speeds to break it in before using it. I was very disappointed to... more

Works Great, Keeps Snow Away
Works great! Since I bought it all the storms have gone south. It handled some old drifts well. It's easy handling... must get used to stopping forward direction before the auger stops. I am a waiting on a good test.

I would like to thank you for the prompt delivery of the Ariens snowblower. When I called for assistance prior to ordering, the person answering was very helpful.

It arrived on time, in perfect shape. The delivery forwarding company Cape Cod Express was courteous and helpful.more

Easy Purchase
I haven't had a chance to use the snowblower yet - no snow. However, the purchasing process was very easy.

Ordering was by phone - the staff processed the order very efficiently. The ability to view different models, compare their features, and read reviews was very helpful in making a selection.

Viewing other manufacturers also helped in assessing features and costs. The cost was lower than local dealers and it included free delivery.

The model I wanted (30" Platinum... more

A Great Way To Buy A Snowblower!!
Unfortunately we haven't had enough snow to put it to the test!! However, the folks at Snowblowers Direct were extremely helpful in picking the best machine for my situation.

There were no glitches in the order or in delivery--it was received, uncrated, assembled, and test driven in a matter of less than a week.

This beats the heck out of going from dealer to dealer trying to find what you want, then finding a way to haul it home and unload it.

I live too far out for free dealer... more

Good Blower With A Few Issues
This blower arrived in 5 days and was delivered to my door by a very helpful driver. I assembled the unit and was ready for action, but the winter had gone so I was unable to test the unit out.

Then came January and five foot of heavy snow. This was too much of a good thing, but I gave it a go. I was able to tear into the virtual wall pretty well, but with some extra muscle.

This blower really can throw the snow a long ways. I have been pretty happy except for two problems. First, the... more

Ariens 30 Inch Platinum Snowblower
My old machine is a Snowking 33 inch, 12 horse snowblower.

Once you drive over the snow the Ariens will not navigate the driveway well at all. It spends most of its time digging into the tire tracks, creating severe dig jump, dig jump operation.

The old machine would just peel the tire track snow buildup right off the blacktop.

I raised the shoes but then the machine leaves too much snow on the driveway.

Ariens' good points are: ease of turning, handle warmers, ease of startup,... more

A Fantastic Snowblower!
I have owned Ariens my entire life. My first was a 5 hp back in the 1980s, and it was dependable for 29 years.

Now I live in the mountains of Utah and see much more snow. I knew what brand to keep- Ariens.

The Deluxe Platinum 30 has the biggest engine for plenty of snow throwing power, yet it's small enough to maneuver easily.

The differential makes the machine so easy to maneuver that even my 100 pound wife can use it.

My neighbors have a Toro and a Murray. They agree the... more

The Best
I bought this snow blower during the start of the blizzard "NEMO" which crippled NYC, LI and the surrounding area. I Actually picked it up the next week, the night we were supposed to get hit again. As with all big purchases I got my snow blower and no more snow since:) Being that I had this awesome machine and no fresh snow I went on a cleaning adventure and cleaned alot wet snow from the perimeter of my yard. WOW no problem, I swear I heard her laugh at the old heavy frozen wet... more

Awesome Machine!
After a ton of research, I bought this snow blower last October. I didn't pay the extra money for the lift gate with delivery, but the company had to use a lift gate to get it off the truck anyway--I didn't have to pay extra.

Although the directions were somewhat confusing, I was able to figure things out and assembly was a snap. It was missing the hairpin, but I called customer service and one was shipped right out to me. The blower was shipped with oil in the engine, which made things a... more

I would love to write a review but it's 90 degrees right now as I bought the snowblower early. The price was great and service was fabulous...I kept submitting questions via email and phone and they were wonderful in helping me decide. I will save this email and let you know how it works come Jan 2013!

Mostly Good
Good new and bad news, first the Ariens 30" Platinum arrived today, about a week early. It arrived with the box in excellent condition and R&L the shipping company was wonderful (very cooperative) to do business with. Snow blowers direct was exemplary to do business in every way.

Then the nit picking starts, the two bolts that hold the chute in place were missing. I called Ariens and tech support told me they were 5/16" x 1.75" NC, they are not, the two bolts are 3/8. ... more

Way Over Hyped Snowblower. Actual Use Is Underwhelming.
I ordered the unit in November 8th 2010 but it was on backorder for a couple weeks. It arrived in excellent shape. Assembled in about an hour after going through all directions.

I had and still have a problem with the vertical nose chute. I think the design is defective. Adjusted the spring and tensions properly, but up/down will barely move unless I manually move it. Totally sucks with wind blowing and you have no control over ice cold spray in your face (brain freeze).

It just snowed... more

Just In Time
Long story short, I had an old chain store snow blower that barely ran and I ended up shoveling more than using the snow blower. So I started looking and studying to find the best blower out there that would last me a long time. Snow Blowers Direct was a great place to start as you can read up on just about every blower made. I ended up choosing the Ariens 30" Platinum after reading all the great reviews and it was the perfect size for my long driveway and sidewalks.

Well winter here... more
