3 Questions
Q: Kriss, what is liftgate service and will my snowblower arrive fully assembled? by Arthur McKean from Massachusetts on December 01, 2011
A: The lift gate service is the hydraulic lift on the back of the semi truck, which lowers the unit onto the ground for you. With us using common carriers, this is an extra cost coming from them.
The snow blower is going to need minor assembly with the handle bars needing to be pulled into their upright position and the chute needing to be attached. by Kriss, Product Expert
Q: Kriss, Still reserching. 30" deluxe versus platinum. How does the auto traction work? Are there any disadvantages? How do they work for transport across yard? Have long gravel drive and do pond for skating. by Ralph from Michigan on September 30, 2011
A: The differences are going to come in the options as you know, but will also come in engine size, which having a bigger engine can be benficial when it comes to the wet heavy snows. The auto traction drive is going to work similar to the locking clutches on other units if you are familiar except you don't have have the clutches. When you start to lean into a turn the snow blower will sense this and one wheel will stay locked in as the other slows helping you make the turn on a dime. Not too many disadvantages except you may run into a situation where you may hit a stone or bump and the unit may want to try to steer that direction. Transport would not be difficult, you would just want to raise up on it and don't engage the auger. by Kriss, Product Expert
Q: I am interested in the Ariens 28 Deluxe model, as it is more in my price range. I know that this model does not have traction control My concern is how hard is it to turn the Ariens 28 Deluxe 180 degrees. Keep in mind that when answering, note that I have a bad shoulder. Thanks.
Thanks. by Rob from New York on August 08, 2011
A: This unit is not going to be a great deal harder to turn. It will have a lock out clutch on the left hand side to lock out a wheel to help make turning easier. This is not going to be as easy as auto traction drive, but not as difficult as a pin on the wheel that most people don't end up using because it becomes a pain. Another option would be to possibly look at a ST24DLE, this has the auto traction drive and is not a great deal more.
Thanks,

Little used so far, but does a great job
Since we are in the middle of a "non-winter", I have had a limited opportunity to use this snowblower. But, when I did use it, it did a great job. It throws the snow quite some distance, and is rather stout and well-built. I believe this snowblower will serve us well for a long time.

Old Snow
We have not had any new snow since I bought my Ariens snow blower. But, the Ariens had no problem chewing through the 16" of 2 week old snow that we had on the property. The old snow was kind of crusty and tough and the two stage machine had no problem slinging the snow out of the way. So far, great machine.

Delivery was timely. Took less than one hour to assemble. Blower started right up and runs great. I would highly recommend this company and Ariens. Jerry in Vermont.

A Christmas gift for my husband
The snowblower was a huge success. It arrived two days before Christmas by means of ABF freight systems. They were great, delivering in the time frame they said and in perfect condition. The snowblower was easy to assemble. When I ordered the snowblower they said I would be receiving a gift too, my husband would get his new snowblower and I probably would not get the snow! So far snow good! Thank you!

Great service
I want to thank Snow Blowers Direct and the shipping company, R&L Carriers for the first class service I received on my recent order. I placed my order on line on Dec. 16 and received my snow thrower on Dec. 21 in excellent condition.
I could not be more pleased with the product, the price, the service, the website, and the delivery. Thanks and have a great Holiday.

extra nut broke a brand new machine
Hi,
Just received this the other day. Assembly was easy and the unit started right up. When I engaged the augers they spun for a few seconds, then I started to see smoke from the belt drive area. I shut it down immediately. I took off the belt drive cover and noticed a large nut had gotten lodged in between the belt and auger pulley. Both were trashed.
I called Ariens and they are sending me the parts to fix it, no charge of course. A factory worker must have dropped the nut in there by accident during final assembly, and it fell into just the wrong place.
The repair is simple, the entire auger assembly disconnects with 4 nuts.
I'm sure the machine will work great, based on the other reviews.

Do i get a co-pilot with this thing??
I told the salesman that i wanted a GOOD snow blower, not realizing i would get a unit with more bells & whistles than my pick up has! The young fellow from R & L was a pleasure to deal with. (Something about truck drivers bonding.) The driver couldn't compliment you folks enough. I wanted to go out & mulch some leaves, but my wife said if i did, she was leaving! I had a few little off the wall questions, so i called Ariens. They were helpful, friendly & a pleasure to deal with.
Thank you for making this a good buying experience.

Finally got to use it!
Never had a snowblower before and after doing research I picked this model. It worked great. To the people that get one let me tell you I too am a 'check all the bolts' type guy and I noticed the machine had oil, I didn't think I had to do anything there. I started the blower and noticed it was sending oil out the engine exhaust and onto the tire, that usually means that there is too much oil and that can blow an engine.
I then went to the manual and noticed that even though this oil stick was about 8 inches long, and almost filled to the top, there was a 3/8" mark at the bottom of the stick. I drained the oil to get to this level. I also noticed that the auger gear box oil plug was stripped. I found out that the company doesn't pre-tap for the screw but used a self-tapping screw which left thread shavings inside the gear box. I called up Ariens and they sent me the new top case cover, the new oil plug with washer, plus gear oil so I can drain and replace. (I tapped the gear box top with a 38 16 tap, also used a small magnet in the gear case to remove any filings, there were none. Ran through the rest of the check list and adjusted as required). The oil was not filled by me so I don't know who did it. Bottom line is this, with all the people looking for jobs some people aren't trained or don't care as they should.
So----I used the blower in the October 29 Nor'easter and It worked as it should, really well! I cleared three other peoples plowed in driveways besides my own and the gears and left wheel released and engaged perfectly. I never buy any tool that I don't put it through ALL the required maintenance, before I use it, and that includes re-checking the manufacturers factory work.

So Far....Very Pleased!
My review at this point, is mainly for the outstanding transaction with Snowblowersdirect.com. They had the best price I could find for the 921022. I was informed at the time of my order that the item was backordered, and they provided an estimated date of arrival. A week or so after my order was placed, I received an email indicating that the item was still backordered, but also that since I was near the top of the "wait list" mine would be one of the first shipped once they arrived. (It was nice to know that I hadn't been forgotten after placing my order).
My snowblower arrived right around the time they said it would (maybe a little earlier). I received an email to contact the trucking company for delivery. Everyone with the trucking company was very pleasant to deal with, and they were very accommodating when scheduling delivery to my house. They even called ahead, so I didn't have to miss an entire day of work waiting for delivery.
My one small gripe is that SBD.com boasts "Free Freight" but the trucking company hits you up for $50 for "Lift Gate Service". Most of us buying these blowers are home owners and don't have loading docks at our houses. The blowers are packaged in a large crate (cardboard box) on a pallet, so it would take four people to lift it down from the truck and carry into your garage. I just think free freight (shipping) should include getting it off the truck. In any event, with the Lift Gate Service, the driver placed it in the garage exactly where I wanted it. The crate was in good shape. I opened the flaps and peered in, and everything looked fine (and was).
Assembly was fairly straight forward, with just a couple of brief hang-ups. Once the handle bars were lifted into place, you are instructed to check the tension of both clutch cables (drive-left grip and attachments-right grip). The instructions say that “proper” adjustment is when the cable has no slack yet is not under tension. Both cables seemed a bit tight, so I put more slack in both.
The next thing that concerned me was the deflector on the discharge chute. When the deflector was lowered to the “lowest (shortest) throwing distance setting” it would stick to the shoot and not release when I shifted to the higher (longer) throwing distance settings.
At first, I thought something was wrong with the spring tension, so I lubricated it with no real success. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the sides of the chute were rubbing against the sides of the defector. When I pinched-in the sides of the chute, the defector popped up into proper position. I had to carefully bend the sides of the chute in some, and the sides of the defector out. That eliminated the rubbing and corrected the problem.
My other concern was that the wheels were locked, and I couldn’t get the unit to roll freely (prior to starting). I released the remote wheel lock, which allowed the left wheel to move, but the right wheel was still locked, only allowing me to move the unit in circles. I thought, “This is crazy, you have to move this thing without starting it and putting into drive every time you need to jockey it around your garage.” I went down to see my neighbor who has a similar blower. On his, he had remote wheel releases for both the left and right side, so he just squeezed both and could move it around. Ariens of course, only has one on the left—but I just couldn’t believe Ariens could overlook a detail such as this. They didn’t……which I realized when I started the unit.
The first time starting the unit (I used the electric start) the engine came to life with the first push of the button. What I hadn’t expected, was for the unit to immediately start rolling, with no clutches activated. I shut the engine off and quickly realized that although I had loosened the tension on the drive (traction) cable, it was still too tight and had the drive engaged. I loosened the cable some more which solved the problem. The proper adjustment for that cable (at least on my unit) I would consider to be “slightly slack.” Also, as you may have already figured out, that resolved the issue of the unit not rolling freely when off. Since the tension had the drive “engaged,” that’s why the right wheel had remained locked. With the proper tension (and the remote wheel lock disengaged) I can roll the unit anywhere I need to while off.
I have started the unit several times (electric and pull-start) and the engine has started flawlessly. I’ve worked it through all of the gears, and tested the attachments clutch. All is tuned and ready to go…just need the snow.
I will add to this review once I’ve had the opportunity to use the blower. I do want to point out again that my transaction with Snowblowersdirect.com was outstanding, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do business with them again.

I ordered model 921022 from Snow Blowers Direct on the advice of my insurance adjuster. I had a Ariens model 921021 which had been damaged beyond repair in an accident during transport. When I got the new model it arrived in a cardboard crate that had been damaged, however there appeared to be no damage to the unit, so I accepted it.
I did the necessary assembly per the instructions that comes with the unit. I even checked all the factory assembled nuts and bolts, oil drain plugs, etc., just to make sure nothing was overlooked or loosened during shipment. I checked the oil level, it barely registered on the dip stick which I thought was unusual as most companies ship with oil added as most companies do a test run, so I added enough oil to bring to the proper level on the dipstick. I then added gas and fired it up. It ran good, I let it run for about 15 minutes, then shut it down.
The next day we had 3 inches of snow so I was able to actually use the blower, it did the job quite well. I returned the blower to the garage, cleaned it up and put it away. In about another week, the blower cab arrived, so I went out to install it to the blower. When I got to the blower, there was a large pool of oil below and around the blower, the dip stick registered nothing. I could not detect how the oil drained from the unit even after removing the bottom pan and the shield on top. The drain plug was in place and tight.
I called Snow Blowers Direct and was told to take it to a local dealer to evaluate and repair. It has been there about two weeks now, we've had two snowfalls since - which I've had to shovel by hand - and I still do not know when I'll get the unit back. Needless to say, I am not pleased at all with the situation.

great snow blower!!
While looking for a snow thrower, I came upon your Web site and what a blessing! It was easy to use and very informative. All I needed to do was to decide which model and make. After talking with other owners, I decided on the Ariens Deluxe ST28LE, great choice.
So, on a Thursday eve I put in my order. But on confirmation, I had made an error, so I sent an E-mail stating my mistake. Friday a.m. I got a call from Chris and in a matter of 5 minutes he had my order fixed. Chris was very professional and knowledgeable in his job. Thanks Chris!!
That evening, I checked my e-mails and saw that my order had been sent! On Monday, I called R & L Trucking and was told my order was in transit and would be in Sacramento by Thursday. It arrived Friday in good shape and complete. Pretty good, coming from the Midwest to a small Sierra town in a week!! After reading the instruction manual, it took less then 40 minutes to assemble and then all I needed was some snow. And it came.
We had 2 foot the first night and a foot the next day. The ST28LE worked great and made quick work of the snow. I would recommend Snow Blowers Direct and Ariens to all. Thanks SBD, Chris and Ariens for a great experience!

For too long I've been shoveling an asphalt driveway in Minnesota half the length of a football field and 30 feet wide plus a big asphalt turn-around for 3 garages.
I did a lot of research, talked to people who move snow for a living, and also got advice from someone at Snow Blowers Direct (which matched the other advice I'd gotten) so I ordered the Ariens ST28LE.
It seems to be exactly the right size for the job.
I paid an extra $100 for fast shipping and to have the driver unload it. Money well spent. I got it in less that 48 hours. I didn't think to have the driver take the pallet back with him. Should have.
Assembly took about an hour. If I had to do it again it would take 20 minutes. There's really nothing to it. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The chute was greased, but not nearly enough, so make sure you have grease handy and put plenty on the base before bolting down the chute. Complete set up is no more difficult than putting wheels and handlebars on a bicycle. The engine started on the first stroke.
We've only had two 5-inch snows since I got it, so don't know yet how it handles really deep stuff. I took it to the end of the drive where the winter-long build-up from the city snow plow was 3-4 ft. deep and compacted, and just playing around I cut that away and opened up the drive a few feet wider on each side in just a few minutes. Surprised how far it throws the snow. Don't need anything bigger. Glad I didn't get anything smaller.

Easy!!
I finally got to use my Ariens snow thrower. Started up on first pull without much effort. Cleared 8-14 inches of snow from my side walk, parking area, and a long driveway in less than an hour. Very happy with all aspects of my purchase from Snow Blowers Direct (price, delivery, and quality product). Would recommend to anyone.

Ariens Deluxe 28
I purchased an Ariens Deluxe online when no other local dealers had any snow-throwers available. Price was very competitive and included shipping. Snow Blowers Direct is rated by Ohio BBB ..... so buy with confidence.
Excellent service and fast shipping ...... so it arrived before the forecast storm. Only recommendation I have is that the machine starts so easily ...... you really don't need the 120 volt electric power cord ..... the pull starter is sufficient.
Have fun with your new toy!

Record Snows
We had record snow here the last three weeks, after the first heavy snow I went looking for a blower, not one left in the state of CT. What was I thinking!
Well I stumbled across Snow Blowers Direct and I could not have hit any better than this. I ordered the Ariens and it arrived three days later. The shipper checked it out perfect. Three storms later the blower works perfectly in three feet of snow.
Thanks Snow Blowers Direct!

Beast of a Snow Blower
This is no snow blower, it's a Beast of a machine. I went through week old snow and ice that was higher than the Beast and it still killed it!
Go get yourself one! Bring on the snow!
Con: I'm no handy-man, so for me the assembly was not easy....but if you actually read the instructions it should be okay to assemble yourself.

Expensive, But Worth Every Dime
I ordered this blower right before we got another 2 huge storms here on Long Island, New York. It arrived even earlier than promised and setup was pretty simple despite a confusing manual (my only gripe). The following week was the big blizzard and the other big storm followed about a week after that and yet again, another 18 inches plus. I just can't tell you how pleased I was with the performance of this Ariens Blower. Consumer Reports has it listed as their top model and everything they said about it was dead on. Start up is a breeze and it cut through 18 inches like a hot knife through butter. No going back and forth like it was with my other blower. This went forward and never stopped. The reverse mode also made it extreemely easy to manuever even though the machine itself is heavy. I can't recommend it enough. I do not know what my wife would have gotten to work if we did not have this equiptment. I was extremely hesitant to make such a big purchase over the web, but their A+ rating from the BBB put my mind at ease. So far a great purchase from a trustworthy company.

It was easy to assemble. (but I am an aircraft mechanic so..) When I checked the oil level just before I started the machine, it was filled to the top of the dip stick. I had drained a full quart of oil to get it down to where it needed to be. It made a big mess all over the unit and my floor. I was not happy.
The machine itself was working AWESOME for the first 30 minutes. Then it started to backfire and loose power. I thought I might have had something freeze up so I put it near the heater in the garage to thaw out for 30 minutes and I replaced the fuel with fresh gas. That did not fix the loss of power problem but the backfiring seemed to stop.
I was told that the next time I use the machine to put the choke on slightly so I will try that.
At work we have the same machine only older with a Tecumseh engine and that has been problem free since we bought it 5 years ago.

This winter in Ct has been awful. Endless snows and ice everywhere. But after purchasing my Ariens 28" two weeks ago, I can tackle any of the obstacles that this winter wants to give me. Thank goodness for the electric start or I never would have been able to get it going, but once I did I was able to clear my driveways and get to work. This friggin' snowblower rocks!
I live on Long Island and we certainly have had our fair share of snow this season! I got the unit delivered on January 17th and it snowed January 18th!!!
This sucker churned through the few inches that fell, plus all of the snow and ice left over from the storms before it...once I learned how to engage both wheels with the brake lever, I got sooo much more traction - the only thing this unit could use is a motorized snow chute that you could aim without having to crank the lever...other than that, this unit is flawless...and also, use 89 Octane, not 83 or 92+...it runs nice and smooth with 89...

Fuel leak
Put fuel in my new blower and found that the carburetor had a fuel leak. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the nearest repair place was in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I drove there and dropped off the blower at a repair shop. It was fixed the next morning. The blower works great. I’ve had no problems with it. The only complaint is that the instruction manual was written for several different models. This made it difficult to read. Also the manual was not written very well and the drawings were poorly drawn.

After a second engine, unit is great
After 5 minutes of use, the engine died on my brand new unit. Snow Blowers Direct was no help at all. They just passed me on and wanted nothing to do with it. Ariens was great. They replaced the engine and now my unit works great. It really does throw snow 40 feet. I would recommend this blower but I would not recommend snow blowers direct.

HELP
Our snowblower broke during the first big storm and there were none to be had. We found SnowblowersDirect, ordered the model we wanted without paying shipping etc and still ended up with a quality snowblower at a lower price than in this area (had one been available). It came right to the door in less than a week. A few screws later and we were ready for the next big storm (and all the others after it!) It's doing a great job!

Can't wait for more snow
I received my snow blower in record time. I believe it was 3 or 4 days after I placed my order that it was delivered. I wish I could write about how wonderful it performs, but it has not snowed since I received it. Actually, it is still in the carton waiting for assembly.
I am wondering if there are tire chains available, as I have a very steep, long road from the state highway to my house. My current snow blower (a single stage attachment to my DR Field and Brush mower required chains to climb the driveway). The performance of the DR snow blower is why I bought the Ariens machine. I was very dissatified with having to stop every 5 feet and unclog the discharge chute.
I am hoping the Ariens machine will perform to my expectations. I can't rate the ST28LE yet, because I haven't used it.

my easy purchase
I am very pleased with my recent snowblower purchase. I've had Ariens snowblowers in the past. The purchase and delivery of my new snowblower went very well. The purchase was made easy by the person I spoke with and delivery was as promised.

Ariens ST28LE recommended
Ordered and delivered within 5 days! Assembly was fairly easy and didn't take long at all. Started right up on the first pull and made short work of the 10" of snow in my rather large driveway. This machine eats the snow right up.
It replaced my 1979 8-hp Ariens that needed just too much repair but served me well for over 30 winters. That's the reason I wanted another Ariens. The difference in how far this new machine throws snow is amazing -- it tossed the relatively dry snow at least 30 feet. Here in northeast Connecticut we're experiencing one of the snowiest January's on record and I am very glad to have this new Ariens. Can't wait for it to snow again. (Well, almost can't wait....!)

Small Problem
My Ariens ST28LE arrived as promised and assembled in approx 1 hour. The light attachment was slightly tricky and took more time than it should have. Better detail would have helped. Started on the first pull. Have had 2 small snow falls, 3" wet & icy and one with 5" of powder. The machine's a beast, can't wait for a real challenge. By the way, the small problem is, I'm spending the same amount of time on my snow removal as I had before the purchase of my snow blower, but I'm clearing 4 houses. My neighbors love the Ariens ST28LE!

Does The Job!!!
I purchased my first snow blower ever after the back breaking blizzard we had in NJ after Christmas this year. Although I missed using this for the blizzard, it did well with the 6" to 8" we had afterwards. I can't imagine not having it. After reading the reviews and checking out other brands, I purchased the Ariens. This is one solid piece of equipment. Don't debate it. I have already done the leg work for you. Go ahead and buy this machine. By the way, shipping was excellent with this purchase. It came in an eighteen wheeler on a pallet. Way to go Snow Blowers Direct...

Backed in a Corner!
Living in Hartford, Ct. we've just had our record breaking snow fall on 01-12-11. 23 1-2" in a 24 hr. period. Didn't have a snow blower, and thought I was just going to get out there and throw that show around with a shovel. Boy was I wrong. I had to stop a truck that was driving down my short street, ask him how much $75 for driveway and sidewalk. I decided at that moment that I was going to get me a snowblower the next morning. Went to Home Depot and Lowes - they had nothing. Got to work and called Sears - nothing. Put snowblower in Goggle search and snowblowersdirect.com came up. Called them, ordered my new Ariens ST28LE and received it today 01-19-11. Put it together in about 25mins, went to blowing that ice covered snow with no problem. This machine is a beast, and I Love it. Now I can't wait for the next snow storm.

A good test
The week after receiving my new Ariens 28 we had a 12" snow fall. The blower worked very well. I had to get use to the controls and weight of the new machine. The delivery went well and the tailgate service was worth the $50 .

A nice machine
I bought this model based on the recommendation of the knowledgeable people at SBD. I originally had my sights set on a 28" Toro but couldn't bring myself around to paying $1500 for a snowblower. I had asked if there was a comparable model for less money and the sales rep pointed me to the Ariens ST28LE. It doesn't have all the fluff that comes with the Toro, but I became convinced that the business end of this machine was of better quality. So I bought it.
I had a little trouble with the delivery. Upon receiving the tracking info, I called the number provided to ask some questions about the delivery details. I was told that the unit would arrive at the terminal on Jan 3 and be delivered on Jan 4. On the 3rd while I was at work, I checked the tracking info at the freight company's website. The tracking info stated that the unit was out for delivery....to my house! There was nobody here to accept it. After calling the dispatcher, he told me that he would call the driver and tell him to meet me after I got home from work.
When I got home from work, the huge box was sitting in my driveway. My neighbor signed for it. Now why complain when I got my snowblower a day early? The neighbor is an older woman and she was pressured into signing for it. The driver told her that if he had to come back another day, I would be charged a re-delivery charge. But the concern was that if there were any problems with any damage upon receipt, then would I be in for a hassle. And the neighbor should not have put on the spot like that. Fortunately, there was no damage and it all worked out. But I never received a call from the freight company. My advice is to get in touch with them as soon as you get the tracking info.
I see people saying that they had the snowblower assembled in 45 minutes. Ummmm....I think that's pretty optimistic. Breaking down the crate and preparing it (and the pallet) for the trash man took 45 minutes. From start to finish, it was about a 2 hour job, crate and all. And that was after doing some homework with a downloaded manual prior to even receiving it. You can get the manual at the Ariens website using a serial number with all 1's. I recommend getting familiar with the manual format since there's some jumping around from page to page depending on your model number. It wasn't difficult, but uncrating-assembly-possible adjustments did suck up alot more than 45 minutes of my time in my freezing cold garage. I'm just being realistic.
I also got a little hung up on whether or not the snowblower was assembled to specifications at the factory. By all appearances it was, since the scraper plate and the skid shoes were adjusted correctly. But I did have to adjust the belt finger. So that had me wondering if I had to do a complete check of all adjustments. If you follow the manual, you will be going through adjustments that may not have to be made...just a heads up. I made a call to the factory to see for the most part if I needed to do the entire adjustment procedure. They claimed that the unit was adjusted to specs and I took their word for it.
She started up right away and lucky for me we had a minor 4" snowstorm 2 days later. So I got to take her for a spin almost right out of the box. It did an excellent job. The one feature that jumped out at me right away was the single to double wheel drive lever on the handlebar. This is great for making sharp turns. Each pull on the lever switches the drive from one wheel to two and back again. This is great and makes for no wrestling with the blower when you have to turn around. The 14" impeller really kicks out the snow. In fact, you can feel the air blowing out of the chute with the mechanism engaged (on dry pavement of course). I was able to cut through the street plow pile at the end of the driveway with ease....something that would give my old MTD fainting spells.
All in all, I recommend this unit and SBD. 5 Stars.

Delivered as promised
I ordered my Ariens Deluxe 28" snow blower after the big Christmas blizzard here in the north east. It was delivered when they said it would be and was just as easy to complete the assembly as was promised. Since then, I have had the opportunity to use my new machine 2 times. It is fantastic. It smiles when it is eating up snow. All my wife can say is "We should have bought one of these years ago"!
This is one quality machine and Snow Blowers Direct is a great place to pick one up!

Great Machine !
I received my snowblower today and had it out of the box and up and running in one hour. The delivery process was great (Had to pay the 50 for the lift no loading dock). It snowed back on December 26 and i still had snow that needed to be cleared from my walkway.
I decided to give this machine a real test. The snow is compact and full of ice etc etc... It ran through it like butter, it spit the snow about 40 ft give or take. Because the snow was so compact, I did have to go back over it. It cleared it after 2 passes. I could not be more happy with the whole process from Customer service to delivery!!! Great product great Service..
I use these reviews to help purchase a snowblower and thought i would give back this time thank you worth it !

I really like this snowblower. We have two driveways, one is 25'X 40' with a small 12'X 50" path to the basement door and the other is 30'X60" with a turn around area of 14X20. We had 15" of snow in one storm and this blower was done in an hour and 45min. That's including cleaning off our two cars, shoveling the covered deck and blowing out the mailbox. Even the snow plow roll which was compressed snow to a depth of about 20" wasn't a problem. Low gear with the occasional stop to let the snow clear from in front of it and it barely bogged down. The power is excellent, but I have to be careful not to chuck a rock through a window... they go a country mile compared to snow. Also, it took me a few tries to get used to the power steering. I wanted to manhandle it to get things finished faster but it is actually faster in the long run to let the machine do the work and you don't get tired.
Complaints...well these aren't complaints really just annoyances:
1. We have a gravel driveway so I tend to pick up a rock here and there and the occasional big rock or ice chunk shows up from the plow which leads to broken shear pins....this is annoying as the Ariens pins break so easily, I know that it's there to protect the gears but the slightest resistance seems to snap them. Even long use in heavy snow seems to wear through them in a few hours run time.
2. When I bought the blower I asked if the power cord listed as an accessory was required or could I use a regular extension cord... response was this is the cord you need in order to use the power start....$29.99 for a 6 foot cord that stays flexible in the cold.....I have a 50ft cord that does the same thing which was $19.99 at the local hardware store. Not a complaint against the machine.
3. If you go any faster than speed setting 3 the machine tends to pull to the right...I don't blow snow at mach speed but if you have a few inches speed 3 is acceptable but MAN do you get tired trying to keep it straight! and yes, the power is on both wheels and not in turn mode
Overall, it's a great machine and I would recommend it to anyone

Powerful Ariens
Received 15" of snow today, with 2'+ drifts. Once again started with 1 pull. This machine powered through it all. This is my first thrower and I found it easy to operate. The unit is powerful, so powerful it found the newspaper and shredded it and then threw it 20 feet, and never slowed down. (This happened to a friend once, and it took him 30 mins. to clear the jam).
My back thanks Ariens and Snow Blowers Direct.

Worth every penny
I spent the better part of late summer researching the best bang for the buck snow blower. I weighed more pros and cons than I will freely admit but the research was worth it.
I got the snow blower in Nov and paid the extra 50 bucks for the driver to unload (worth the money). Assembly as stated by others was quite easy minus the light being attached under the control panel.
This week I finally got to use my new toy in 8-10" of snow and it worked like a champ. Once the city plow trucks came by I decided to run test 2 and see how well it ate through the thick chunks of snow and ice left by the plow. The Ariens just ate right through all that ice and I was having so much fun I helped out all of my neighbors too.
In the end while I debated between the 28 and 30 I believe I found the best "bang for the buck". For others researching I can not stress how important and glad I am that I have a metal snow chute. Hearing the ice chunks bang against the chute made me so happy that I didn't get a blower with a plastic chute. While the extra hp in the 30 would be nice, I, in no way feel that the machine is under-powered. In fact, with this snow blower my bigger concern is how far I can throw the snow.
Cheers to all

You get what you pay for
Finally broke down and purchased a snowblower after the blizzard of New Jersey during Xmas week. Forget about the big box stores having any units in stock that were worth anything.
Kudos to Todd from SBD for selling me what I needed rather than what he wanted to get rid of. Unit was delivered two weeks ahead of original date and was delivered to my back door by delivery man. Did not pay for extra lift-gate service.
The blower is a beast. Easy to put together and is great to have electric start but not needed- this bad boy starts on one pull. I can now see why Ariens is rated so highly. Have used several times and does what it is supposed to do.
Was concerned about my driveway which has an incline and was not sure about traction with the tires. No problem with traction with this unit. Happy with the purchase.

Amazing
I bought this snow blower after I blew the engine on my Craftsman this year. I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to this unit and I couldn't be happier with my choice.
This snow blower is well made - it starts easily, handles well, and most of all, gets into the snow and throws it almost into the next state! The ability to throw the snow a long way is important for me because I have a long drive and wide areas at the bottom apron and at the top in the parking area where I need to throw much of the snow in one direction so I can get the snow up and over the existing piles.
The snow blower also worked well when the snow plow came through and piled up a deep, wet, slushy mound at the end of the driveway. The Ariens didn't clog and handled the wet snow well - the old Craftsmen would have clogged multiple of times.
If you're looking for an excellent snowblower for about $1000, this is it!

Beast
Owned a 520E (smallest 2 stage model at the time) and it did pretty well. Wanted something a little more substantial and with a few more options. The 28 did not disappoint. This thing is an animal. Went through 20 inches of snow plow packed wet snow with little trouble, simply had to slow down to 2 on the speed lever. Throws snow as far as anyone could want, and has 2 belts to drive the auger which transfers max power and increases the reliability of the machine. No better machine on the market at this price.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH NEW BLOWER
With maybe 3 hours of heavy use so far, I like my machine. It's everything I need and so far works great.
Throws snow a needed long distance with ease and tackles snow banks deeper than 14 inches.
I purchases the cab for it afterward, still haven't got that on though, I need another set of fingers to mount it. Only other item I'm thinking about getting for my Ariens is a set of tire chains.

Unit arrived today, box and unit in mint condition. Glad I went with tailgate service, driver had to wheel the unit down the road on a skid loader, and up my driveway. Woman faces 18 inches..
Ordered Ariens Deluxe 28. No problem with delivery, and the man helped park it in the garage. Assembly was not difficult except for placement of the light. Machine came with oil, and I just added gas.
Tried it out and it started on the first light pull (good sign). Less than 1 week later, we had a blizzard that dumped 18 inches of snow while I was away for Christmas. Had to park car at the end of 550 foot driveway and walk to garage. Changed into my warm clothes and powered up my Ariens 28. Once again, it started on a very easy pull. Had a little trouble going up a 25% grade on the driveway due to lack of traction. Had to put some push to it but it got the job done.
After the driveway was done, I had to clear a flat area of 90 feet by 90 feet. However, the machine blew the white stuff over 40 feet to the side or front. The entire job took 2.5 hours. With the driveway grade, I should have bought a set of chains for the tires. Other than that, if I get 10 or 12 inches next time, it will be a piece of cake.
I am a 5 foot tall, 125 pound woman, so any larger guy would have absolutely no problem with this machine and probably would like it better than the first quarter of a Monday Night football game!

Ariens snowblower
Snow-blower was delivered in 3 days, delivery went very well and the driver actually wheeled it from the street into the garage. Assembly was very easy and didn't take long at all.
Got to use it the same day with 4 -6 inches of snow. Blower worked very well. The only thing I noticed right away is that the new blower doesn't throw snow behind you like my old Ariens did. When I got to the end of the driveway I was blowing snow into the road.
Other than that the I am very happy with the purchase.

Ariens snow blower
This is a really nice snow blower. I like that it starts on the first or second pull each time. I have had a small learning curve from my previous snow blower that had the drive on the right and the blower on the left.
This model is reverse. Plenty of power and the additional features, crank right and left of snow direction, and the chute controls are really handy. Overall, a good machine if you need to move a fair amount of snow.

I am well pleased with my new Snow thrower!! As i was doing the end of my driveway I had to make sure I was not throwing snow back onto my neighbors driveway, the snow was flying!!!!. It even busted through the hard piled snow at the end of driveway with minimal bogging.
The only disappointment was that the starter cord was not included.

The Ariens is awesome
Just had about 8 inches of fluffy snow and cleared the driveway and walkway in no time. Also did the neighbors driveways and walkways.
It shoots the snow about 50 feet. Need to get the snow cab. The wind was wicked and sometimes blew the snow right back and covered me.

My snowblower arrived a couple of days late but was no problem as we had not had any snowfall yet.
I had the snowblower unboxed and assembled in less than 45 minutes. After filling the tank with gasoline the engine started with one pull and continues to do so.
I was impressed with the fit and finish of the product out of the box unlike so many imported items. We have had only one snowfall so far this year and it was about 6 inches. I have a gravel driveway that is about 800 feet long which the Ariens handled with no problem.
I am very pleased with my Ariens snowblower and would recommend it to anyone.

Here in Washington state we have had snow only one time for me to blow snow. The snow blower works great.
I work for the state highway department on a 4500 ft level pass just a ways from Yakima and I operate a really big snow blower, and my Ariens blower works just like the big ones, and it is a lot of fun to operate.
The only problem I have is when you disengage the drive axle to turn around I have a hard time to get it locked up again.

My new Ariens Deluxe ST28LE does everything very well. We had a lot of snow in November here with about 8 inches at one time... used the Ariens 5 times in November. Not a blizzard, but still, a good test for snow blower.
It starts right away at 10 degrees outside, goes through the the snow easily and the Disc-O-Matic drive system is fantastic. It really kicks the snow out effortlessly. Seems to be pretty easy on gasoline too.

First Blower Experience
I purchased this for just under $1000. After I bought it SBD lowered its price. I called and they refunded me the difference. Good job!
The blower works as designed. However, I wish that both wheels drove the unit, rather than having just one drive wheel. The unit gets bogged down in small compressed tire ruts that really aren't very hard. Having just one drive wheel tires you out keeping it straight when it meets resistance - it wants to turn to the left.
If I can figure a way to connect the other wheel to the drive shaft, posi-traction would be great.
It does throw the snow a good distance and I have had no issues with small rocks and twigs.

The unit gets bogged down in small compressed tire ruts that really aren't very hard. Having just one drive wheel tires you out keeping it straight when it meets resistance - it wants to turn to the left.
If I can figure a way to connect the other wheel to the drive shaft, posi-traction would be great. more

Everything I Expected and More
Using Snow Blowers Direct was a great decision. The Staff answered all of my questions (more than once - I'm a Florida boy buying my first snow blower after last winter's snow-mageddon in Maryland) so that I felt confident that I wasn't buying too puny of a model, or buying overkill. But I wanted a blower that would last a lifetime, too.
The unit came way earlier than I expected (I ordered in October, hoping for delivery by Thanksgiving). Paying for the lift-gate delivery service was worth every penny. A month after delivery I finally got around to finishing the assembly and making sure I was ready for our first snow. I decided to try the manual start, and it started on the very first pull. Son of a gun! I haven't had any snow yet to give a full evaluation on performance, but so far I am more than confident that I'm ready when it comes.
I bough the Electric Start cord, and my only negative comment I have is that I wish that there was an option for the cord to come in a 20 foot length so I could reach the only outlet in my garage.

A great experience!
I shopped locally and found just the machine I wanted-- the Ariens 28".
Then I checked online and found Snow Blowers Direct. I received the same price from them as the best I could find retail. AND I didn't need to pay sales tax, AND it was delivered right to my door, AND it got shipped exactly when SBD said it would be shipped.
I could not possibly be happier with buying the machine through Snow Blowers Direct!

Good Job
I was apprehensive about buying online, but when I went to my local Home Depot at the end of October and they didn't have a single blower on display I decided to give it a try. I went even further and sent a personal check to take advantage of that discount as well. I did include lift gate delivery and was glad I did. Could not have been happier with the whole transaction.
I did run in to a small problem on the set up. It seems I had hung up a cable when I moved the handle bars from the down to up position. As a result the wheels were locked and I could not move the machine. I called Ariens customer service, explained my problem and was back in business in no time.
I don't anticipate having to purchase another machine in my lifetime, but if I'm wrong, I'll return to Snow Blowers Direct for another Ariens.
In the mean time, bring on the snow!

Excellent So Far
We live in the mountains where normal annual snowfall ranges from six to ten-plus feet. Our driveway is steep and long and the parking pad is relatively large. Because of the steepness of the driveway, we use chains.
Upon receipt of the machine, it took some assembly. It took a little more effort for us than some of the reviewers indicated, probably because we aren't the most mechanically-minded people. However, it did go together without making us crazy -- if that tells you anything.
Our previous machine, one where the snowblower is interchangeable with the mower deck, was inadequate because it was a single stage and broke shear pins nearly every time we used it (and the shear pins were extremely hard to replace).
So far this year we have used this Ariens three times. Two times were with medium-heavy snow 8-9 inches deep. Once was with 6 inches of lighter snow. The machine handled all three situations with no problem whatsoever. We did manage to break a shear pin, but that was our fault. Replacing it, though, was amazingly easy.
We will write another review after we have seen how the machine reacts with deeper, heavier, more challenging snow. At this point, though, we are "luvin' it".

Excellent item! I bought this monster because of the great experience I have had with Ariens in the past.
I was able to get it at the same price as a local store but avoid the sales tax. Plus, it was delivered right to my garage door!! With lightening speed!!!!
It's only October, but in Minnesota it's never too early to prepared for winter and after easy assembly, I am ready for anything.
Buy with complete confidence, as this is my second item form Snow Blowers Direct and I couldn't be happier with my experiences.

Monster Machine
I was skeptical about purchasing something like this online. However, delivery was quick, assembly was easy and now, bring on the snow.
Very impressed with Snow Blowers Direct and Ariens.

Great looking machine
I just took delivery my new toy and it went great.
I was a little leery of buy such and expensive item online, but took the chance because it was a a big savings over buying locally. The base price was less, and when you throw in free shipping and no sales tax (a big savings in NY) it was a great deal.
Everything went exactly as they said it would. The machine itself seems to be solid and very well built- it was what I expected from Ariens.
I can't comment on how it goes thru snow yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. It fired up right away and was ready to go.

A beast where it counts
I just received my new 28" Ariens 921022. It was very straightforward to assemble - you are basically just unfolding the handlebars and attaching the chute. One of things I noticed right away was the light was different than the stock photo. The manual covers most of the deluxe and platinum models however, only the 921022 has a light that must be mounted to the left side of the handlebars and not pre-mounted on the front of handle controls as shown in the picture. Not really a big deal I guess it just would have been nice for Ariens to be upfront with that change as you can't view the online manual without a serial number. The light appears to work just fine though.
When shopping, I decided that the professional line was needlessly "too rugged" for my purposes - aluminum vs cast iron gear case (I don't think I could ever realize the benefit to pay the extra for cast iron). I know some people swear by professional and by all means buy the most expensive snowthrower Ariens sells. However, I wanted a powerful and rugged (yet reasonably priced) for home use. I personally wrestled with a 921018 and 921020.
I ultimately decided on the 921022 because of the following reasons: No handwarmers - I know they sound nice and all but I just didn't feel it was worth the money since I already know how to dress appropriately in the cold (thanks Mom!) and I've read that this is one of things that tends to break the most on most snowthrowers.
Secondly, I liked the idea of the autotraction but, using snowthrowers in the past I just didn't see how that would be all that beneficial for just doing my driveway and sidewalk. Lastly, the "quick turn" for the chute. I decided I was better off with the 2.5X crank as that seemed to be the most reliable. With doing my driveway and sidewalk, I will be turning the chute repeatedly. Reviews I've read including this site and Ariens indicate that "quick turn" has been problematic for some owners. Maybe its just me, but the 2.5x crank is very easy to use and I think pretty effortless to operate.
In summary, I haven't seen this throw snow yet (since its only September) but I believe this will intimidate any snowflake. The tires have great tread for snow, the auger/impeller clearing width at 28" is nice - a couple neighbors "stopped by" to chat after seeing this thing sitting in the driveway with the engine running.
In short, I think this is an impressive machine and Ariens built a quality machine for a great price.
