  1 Question
Q: My Husband and I are looking to buy a new snowblower. What is the best one to purchase for a very...long and very...steep drive way? We live in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, so in the spring we have alot a very heavy snow. Probably out of those three conditions, the most important is dealing with the steepness of the driveway.
by Cindy Snider from Colorado on August 24, 2011

A: Cindy,

My suggestion would be to get something with a larger engine if possible, this is going to help with those heavy snows. The other suggestion would be to look at something with tracks. Some models to consider would be Honda, Ariens, and Husqvarna. The Ariens ST28DLET would be the most powerful of these as well as the Honda 1332TAS. The nice feature on the Ariens would be the traction drive control. This would help with turning, because these machines can be difficult to maneuver.

Winter Work Horse
This model is great. I have the HS928KTA (with out electric start) at work and we use it all winter long, some 5 years now. It starts easy and eats through everything. Some times it is deep enough that you have to make multiple passes but is gets the job done. It may be a little hard to handle for turning and such but my experience has been that they all are, even the ones with the fancy steering triggers still require you to "man" handle them.

These Hondas have the hydrostatic... more

Terrible Control Layout
After owning a Yamaha YS828 for 22 years, I decided that it was time for a new blower as it was getting hard to get parts in a timely manner, and the only local dealer left some to be desired as a mechanic. They aren't available in the U.S. at present either. The Honda almost looks like it came off the same assembly line.

It blows snow comparable to the Yamaha, starts by hand much easier, and I love the hydrostatic drive, but, I think the controls were
laid out by someone four feet tall,... more

Fast Wearing Roller Wheel
The roller wheels wear very fast and end up with flat spots. The plastic skid also has a tendency to climb on top of the snow rather than keeping the auger housing close to the work surface. Going to remove them and replace with my own version of a pizza cutter wheel.

The Owner's Manual Is Not Enough
When I received the snowblower, delivered in a very timely manner, and opened the crate it was missing the instructions for the dealer set up. This was easily resolved with a phone call to Snow Blowers Direct, who emailed me the detailed set up instructions.

The instructions could have been a bit clearer, with better illustrations, however all is well. Interesting that I examined the same snow blower at a dealer who did not set it up well and the chute crank was rubbing up against the... more

Great Workout..
If you don't have time to hit the gym on a regular basis buy this blower. No way to turn but to lift. Over priced for the lack of user friendliness. Good luck..
