Bad Wheel Design/poor Company Backup
Live in mountains of AZ. Received this thrower new from kids. Left wheel sticks in snow. Rubs belt housing. Called company (MTD). Said they get this complaint and are told to say it doesn't matter as not supposed to use wheels. Obviously they haven't used this thrower. It rides on the rear wheels too, and when one sticks, it drags and makes moving it in the snow a bear. I explained it's brand new and they said take it to a service center. Nearest one over 3 hrs away. I asked about just sending me a new wheel and I'd install it. They said I could BUY a new one from them. I wouldn't ever buy a product from this company again.

Great For What It Is
The blizzard of 2011. I live near Chicago and when I found out we were getting upwords of 24 inches of snow I finally broke down and bought a snow blower. This was one of the least expensive so I did not expect too much from it. With a little work I got through all of the snow with little problem. I did have to go back in a few areas or push hard to get through some areas, but I think it worked great where the snow is not so deep. You get what you pay for and that is exactly what I got. This is not top of the line so don't expect it to work like top of the line. I am proud of what this little guy did, it never quit on me. So, for the price I think it is a great buy!

Piece Of Junk
Bought from a large home improvement retailer. Second time to use it, the recoil rope broke. Big box store refused to take it back, the first authorized service dealer listed on the website as well as the telephone listing refused to take it under warranty. Stated that MTD "burned" him in the past by failing to make good on warranty repairs. Second authorized dealer took it but stated that MTD refuses to warrant anything moving such as wheels, springs, recoil starter ropes, rubber blades, etc. The warranty will cover the engine (made in China).

Pretty Good
We got 18" of snow here on Long Island in New York and this was the first time using this machine and considering how deep the snow was, I was still able to make the most of this machine. I had to cut into the snow and then back out and then in again so it was a little tedious but it did do the job and the engine ran well and never stalled.
Still, this machine is better suited for 6' or less to be the most effective but it was the only machine available as everything bigger was out of my budget or sold out. If used properly, the machine is a workhorse for the money in my opinion.
The down side is that it's not self propelled and the handle, even at it's highest setting is too low for my taste and my back was hurting. It couldn't handle the waist deep snow at the end of the driveway after the plow truck passed without plenty of shoveling first but I did eventually break through with this snowblower........slowly.
I have a big 2 car wide, 4 car long driveway and this machine was still a big help. Overall,it's a good machine for the money and it's rare to get this amount of snow here so I think it'll be around for awhile but to be honest, if I could have found a bigger machine, I would have bought it over this one.
It ran great and I got a lot done on a single tank of fuel and it starts easily and never clogged the chute once which I thought was impressive. Take your time, use it properly, maintain it and it should be just fine to use for most snow.

I bought it as a replacement for a Murray that the electric start key froze up. The floor sample was a Murray. When I got home it was a MTD. I called and was told by Menard's that it is the new name for Murray. It is a piece of junk. Just as much snow comes out the bottom front and back as come out the shut. It is hard to maneuver. It is not like my old Murray. Menard's won't take it back.
snowblowersdirect reply: The folks at this big box store were not exactly truthful in what they told you either. MTD is not the "new name" for Murray. These are two totally different companies. Murray products are manufactured by Briggs & Stratton Power Products. MTD is their own company with their own products and own brands.

Does A Great Job
Had the first heavy snow storm in NJ this year. For its size, I was really amazed how well it removed the snow. We had about two feet of snow, but with a little care this machine was able to handle it.
I found that if you slowly go back and forth you are able to go under the deep snow going forward and when you pull back the rest of the snow collapses to the ground and you are able pick that up when you move forward again. It takes a little more time, but my property is small and I don't have space for a larger machine.
Yes, it will stall if you try and force it through the snow, but I was able to clear a forty foot long sidewalk, a ten foot wide driveway to accommodate four cars, and a 20 foot long path to my front door.

Overall Good Machine
The machine has preformed better than expected. There is one thing you need to look at though, the location of the oil stick. Putting oil in the machine when it is level is a bear.
The machine starts well and handles very good. We got an additional 7 inches last night but about two hours later the drive was cleared as well as the sidewalks. I don't know what I would have done with out it. Our first snow was on Thanksgiving, which was 7 inches then we got about 8 inches in the middle of December.

Couldn't Ask For Anything More
I got 5 inches of wet snow in Connecticut. It was my first time using this machine and I thought it would bog down like any other machine would, but it had "snow" problem handling the wet snow.
It handled the snow from the plow just fine and i wouldn't use any other machine.

Works Great
We got 8 in. of snow and my old unit broke.
I bought this one and waited all day for my 11 year old to return from school. He used it for 3 hours and did our house- about 100 ft.
Then he did the house next door (30x100) and Grandma's house, and he did not have any problems.
SBD RESPONDS: As handy as it is to have kids help with snow blowing, please be sure that they understand- and follow- all the safety advice covered in the Owner's Manual!

Worthless Unless Around 4 Inches Or Less
I only have a short driveway about 50 ft or so, and 30 ft wide. After fighting with the thing to barely blow any snow, I finally resorted to shoveling.
Eventually I went back to the snow blower. The snow is a little heavy, but not enough to slow the machine down, I wouldn't think; or make it stall out.
I finally got frustrated with the machine and decided I was going to call MTD to complain about it. I kept using the snow blower so I could tell them all the problems I had with the machine.
76 stall-outs and 1 hour, 15 minutes later I was done snow blowing my driveway. BTW it's pointless to use this at the end of driveway with the pile from city snowplows.
The pile took 4 passes worth of the snow blower, and that alone took me 30 minutes to snowblow. Then I headed into my house and called MTD.
I waited 10 minutes to talk to someone; when someone finally answered he didn't want to hear anything I had to say. He connected me to a service center and that was it, a 30 to 45 second phone call with him.
This machine will throw snow with 4 inches or less of powder snow, and even then it does a crappy job at best, about 3/4 of the snow goes thru the chute the other 1/4 flies out the front so you end up having to make a second pass to get all the snow removed.
In the Spring this machine is going in the front yard with a For Sale sign put on it, and I'm buying a new one that will actually do the job.

Runs Like A Bear In Buffalo, Ny
I use my snow thrower in well over a foot of snow and it works just fine- better than some two stage blowers I have owned.
It runs like a bear and clears snow very well, and let me tell ya we get a hell of a lot of snow in this town!

For 3" Or Less Of Powder Snow
I bought this snow thrower about a month ago. The first day I got it, I opened the box and put it together in a snap. Actually, there wasn't much to it, just pull the handle up and lock it into place, put oil and gas in it and start it up.
I think I had about 4" of snow on the ground that day. I started it up and went at it. Immediately I was surprised at how much snow it left behind! It was actually going right OVER about an inch of snow, almost like the blade was not touching the ground, but in fact it was.
It does not handle wet snow at all! Trust me, not even slightly wet snow. And it is not light either, when pushing this thing through some heavy snow, it gets to be a real task after a while.
This is a snow thrower for someone looking to use it on 3" or less of POWDER snow. On the plus side, it runs good and starts right up on the first or second pull. Just like a new snow thrower should.... I guess.... I'm selling it and buying a better one for sure. Don't waste your money.
