Possibly misuse?
I've had a Yard Machine 4.5 HP 21 inch snow thrower for over 10 years, not sure if it's the same model mentioned here, but it is a 4.5 21 inch model by MTD. I have had no problems at all in heavy or light snow. I've replaced the belt one time ( easy to do ) and the spark plug every year ( but that's my choice ). I had the gas/oil mixture wrong once, but that was also my fault, other than that, I would purchase one again. Use it as it is designed and there should be no issues. I have used it on a 55 foot long gravel driveway for 2 winters and a nice concrete drive about 30 foot long for 8 years. Just take your time and let it do the job the way it was meant to. Would purchase one again.

Last Sunday in New York
After the snow stopped, most adults were outside were using snow blowers.
I know on my block there were at least two MTD 8 hp 26", One Toro 4hp 21", and the newest machine was red, but I didn't get the name of it.

MTD Snowblower
I have a 175 foot gravel drive and have had one of these blowers off and on for the last 15 years.
Just spray the chute with WD 40.
Sure, it does not do a 10 inch deep pile all at once, but is a great blower with no issues.

I can see why this unit is discontinued...
This model is one of the worst snowblowers ever! I bought this two winters ago.
It will only handle light, fluffy snow. The chute clogs constantly with anything else. I find myself shoveling with almost every snow- I bought this snow thrower to avoid that. Don't make the same mistake!

Worst winter
Winter 2007 we had one of the worst winters ever since I have lived in the State of Missouri.
We had a great ice storm with 6 solid inches of ice (and more). Trees where falling down and driving was impossible.
A couple of days later it snowed on top of that, and I was so glad I had my snow equipment ready!
This same machine, in the gasoline model, suffers from auger inadequacy.
Mine lasted for only one season and the auger assembly shattered on the shaft, thus rendering it completely unusable.
I purchased a new Yard Machine from Lowes and it lasted only 3 usages when the same event occurred. While standing in line for a return (it was only 3 weeks old), the gentlemen standing behind me said that he has 2 MTD Yard Machine snow throwers with the same problems.
It well appears that any MTD product is faulty, defective, and should be avoided at all costs.
The best thing I can say about this machine is that it starts well and works on light, fluffy snow.
On wet snow its a piece of junk! The auger gets clogged so often you're better off using a shovel.
Save your money and buy a products that works on all kinds of snow.
SBD RESPONSE: Here's a tip. Use the Ariens Sno-Jet non-stick spray to prevent the snow from sticking to the auger. Or, we recommended buying a more powerful snow blower like the Ariens 5- or 7-HP.
