Snow Joe Ultra (19") 13-Amp Electric Snow Blower

The first time I used it, we had a blizzard. It was 6" to 30" deep of medium weight snow.

Some reviews said that it broke the first time it was used. So I figure those people were slamming the machine into the snow. Even gas-powered ones break with abuse. I was going to take my time and work with the snow blower and not force it.

The first path cut in the snow was slow going. I had tip it up to work the top of the snow then into the bottom of the pile. After I had a path I just slowly cut into the side wall about 8 inches, the width of the opening.

It throws the snow about 15 feet up and 20 feet out. Drifts that were 3 feet deep I knocked down with a shovel then cleared it. I did not have to lift snow. My neighbor has a monster-sized snow blower, and does everybody's driveway apron. I did some of the snow plow pile but very little.

One thing is, after you're done, quickly go over your driveway again and it will be nicely groomed. I spent 4 hours to do what would have taken me at least 7 hours and my back didn't hurt. I'm 54 years old and I don't want to lift snow anymore.

I had heard about them years ago and thought that is what I needed. I didn't want any gas or any liquid to keep around, so electric was the way I went.

I just went on line and Snow Blowers Direct.com came up as a website. I bought this model because of its size and it is only 35 lbs. Being a middle-aged lady I thought I could handle that.

It was shipped very quickly, and the only delay was UPS getting it to be me due to all the snow we got. Being lazy I brought it to work and my co-worker helped me put it together.

It was so easy, I should have done it myself. We put it together in only a few minutes. It is so lightweight I put it in the back of my car and off I went.

The next day we got another storm and I couldn't wait to use it. It worked great. Very easy to operate. Just be careful with the cord so it doesn't go under the machine. It started right up.

My neighbor saw it and he was the one that sometimes would help me out in the snow. I was so happy not to have to bother him anymore. He is, by the way, 75 and uses his snow blower.

So, I would highly recommend this machine, especially for us ladies. It was easy to use and I love the model. The price was right and was shipped the next day- as I said, it was just UPS that was delayed.

The handle folds up for easy lifting and storage. I wished I had gotten this snow thrower about five years ago.

Now in NJ we don't see enough snow to quantify one of those gigantic, snow-gobbling gas behemoths that require a Masters in chemistry and a Doctorate in patience to get it to work.

I did my research, asked around and settled on the Snow Joe. It was ordered on Wednesday and arrived Monday...2 days before we received some more of Nature's fluffy bounty.

It was super easy to assemble, taking less than 7 minutes after reading the instructions. It was easy to operate: push the button while squeezing the handle and there you go. If you can vacuum a rug, you can use this snow blower.

I used some silicon spray prior to use and it didn't clog up. Take your time, watch where the cord is and you should have no trouble whatsoever.

I recommend this product highly with 2 caveats: 1. Get the non stick spray, and 2. Get the cold weather Extension Cord and maybe use a garden hose reel to store your cord tangle-free.

You ask for an honest review...and here is mine. I only purchased the Snow Joe after reading the comments on the web site, but I'm not nearly so happy with my Snow Joe.

While the motor and blades certainly seemed to have the power to move the snow, the small plastic wheels actually inhibited its forward mobility. It was quite a disappointment to not be able to even clear a path from my door to the driveway, approximately 10 feet, and ended up resorting to the shovel.

The snow was not deep nor heavy, quite powdery in fact; and there was no ice on the ground beneath the snow. I even dragged the machine through the house to clear a path from the patio doors to the end of the deck (about 18 feet), but this, too, proved nearly useless.

I wish someone were here to video the fiasco. I actually would like to return the blower for a refund and plan to contact customer service to do that.

Unfortunately, yesterday (Feb 7, 2010) it hit some compacted snow or ice that twisted the blades and sent them into the housing. If the housing were not destroyed, I think I could purchase a new set of blades, but I don't see housings offered as a parts option. The motor still works!

A minor irritant -- the cord socket has no securing device. The vibration shakes the cord -- even a new one -- loose. It would be useful to offer a left or right had socket mounting option and maybe an inside/outside one, too.

Design flaw -- flimsy housing. Automatic stop may have saved my blades and housing.

All I can say is WOW! I am on the East Coast right now with 16 inches of snow...I have never owned a blower before.

I was not going to shovel 16 inches of snow, so I ordered this online and had the express ship. It is the BEST money I have ever spent.

People at work were laughing at how "it would last about a minute" and suggested I go to a Big Box store and buy a $1000 blower....yeah right! My Snow Joe was awesome.

I took my time, managed the cord, and ....in about 2 hours my 4 car driveway and sidewalk were done. I am so happy. Thank you Snow Joe and Snow Blowers Direct.

P.S.- I took plenty of pictures to show those nay-sayers at work! With the money I saved I am going to go to Aruba HA!

I have owned this Snow Joe for a couple of years. If you have owned a gas thrower you will be frustrated.

As a fifty year old feeling like 60, and with 2 back operations I would say many women in their 20's have more strength than I do, and the thing does help tremendously to save my back, and can be used out of the box.

Tighten the handle screws every time you use it or the vibration makes them fall off. Although advertised and the size of a 12 inch it just does not function for that kind of snow.

You have to angle it up to do six inches and then go flat to do the rest so twice as much work. Four to 6" as people say is the range. If you get snow 3-4 times a year and 3-5 inches and are cheap like I am, then this is for you.

It takes a while to get used to hold the cord in one hand or doing a pattern to avoid the cord, but it's not going to kill you even if you run over the cord.

It does not clear down completely to the ground so you are left with a dusting of snow and may need to do 2 runs or use a shovel if you are completely anal like me but force yourself not to bother.

Just a little rock salt and it's gone. You probably are not going to get better than this for a straight electric; having had the Toro line. Sears used to make a gas model of this version for the same price but no more.

You'll get socked for 2-3 times the price everywhere unless you get lucky at a garage sale. Would have liked to rate it a 3.5.

I live in northeast Indiana and we just had about 3 inches of snow.

I assembled the snowblower about 2 weeks ago but this is the first snow since. When I first went outside I was hoping that nothing bad would happen, since I had read some reviews that were saying some pretty serious things were wrong with the blower.

I had no problems except for the fact that I had to figure out how to deal with the cord because I have never used and electric snowblower before.

Over all it was a GREAT buy and I would recommend to anyone who doesn't want to mess with oil and gas. It is also very light!

I bought Snow Joe after December 2009's 12"+ Virginia snowstorm and 2 people shoveling 3.5 hours each, just to clean the front driveway and back deck.

I used it this past Saturday (January 30) when the snow was about 10 inches deep. It was fairly "dry" snow too. I was pushing it along steadily forward when the motor cut off and would not restart.

I went inside and found that it had tripped the circuit breaker. Apparently the strain of going steadily forward in 10 inches of snow was too much for it. So after the breaker was switched back on I was able to restart it.

I was able to finish the job by going a few inches forward and then backing off momentarily before continuing forward a few more inches. I (without another person helping) was able to clear the front driveway and back deck (plus a good portion of the side driveway) in about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

So, if it had not been for tripping the circuit breaker, I would have given it 5 stars, not 4. With an even more powerful motor, I think it could rate a 5.

Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes. 2.33 hours total with less back strain is much better than over 7 hours combined of shoveling.

Even a lithium grease used to prevent friction or metal casing around the "safety button" would improve the product.

To be honest, though, I appreciate the amount of concern about safety that went into the product, I think it is heavily over done.

I think a simple switch located on the outside of the switch box with lever release connection on the inside would be more effective. A spring loaded safety switch with a plastic rotating button and spring loaded plastic lever is unnecessary. I am reminded of the acronym KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid).

I look at my product, and I see parts that will keep going bad and keep being replaced by the warranty as provided by the company's warranty, but I find myself asking "what happens when the 1 year warranty expires?"

I come to the conclusion it's apparent that I will have to buy a new snow blower after the warranty expires. With that being said I become discouraged from wanting to buy from Snow Joe again. I don't want to pay $350 a year replacing snow blower after snow blower, when I could get a Craftsman for the same price despite it being gas powered.

Electric snow blowers are intended for light duty use because they have to run on household power, just like a shop-vac or coffee maker. Perhaps a gas unit would give you better service during North Dakota winters?

I would recommend the Joe for medium to smaller drives. I have a concrete drive so I don't know about gravel drives. My guess is if it hits loose gravel it would throw it a ways.

If it lasts it was a smart investment. This is my first winter here in Ohio with the Joe.

My neighbors are aware of my medical condition and the lady next door shoveled my driveway and sidewalk without my asking. I found that to be embarrassing and immediately found your product on the internet and made my purchase.

Subsequently, we have had two (2) snow falls. One was three (3) inches and one five (5) inches. The blower worked admirably. Although I must admit I found it to be somewhat of a strain because of my back and heart condition, it is much better than trying to do it manually.

I recommend it wholeheartedly. I should have purchased one years earlier.

My brother bought this Snow Joe snow blower and he didn't have enough space to use it in. So he knew I had been studying all electric snow blowers on the computer.

My husband and I are older people with bad back and neck problems and couldn't pull the pull rope on the gas blower we had. We were hurting and tired before we could blow any snow.

He called me and said sis you can have the snow blower. I SAID WHAT?! Oh God answered my prayer. I said I will take it but I must pay you for it. ( now to figure out how to get it to my house as I live 200 miles from my brother. )

I called my sister in law and she was going to visit where my brother lived. I asked her if she could go and pick up the Snow Joe for me. God bless them both as I am sure happy with the Snow Joe.

We had it here for a week WAITING FOR SOME SNOW... Finally it snowed for 3 days. I was out there every day happy as a lark and thanking God and my brother and my dear sister in law for the electric snow blower.

I'm not exhausted and hurting before I start to blow snow now. It is very easy for me to use. I do our driveway and the back yard. Big job but no problem for our Snow Joe.

No mixing gas and oil and no pulling a pull rope, this is a real blessing to us. Just plug in and go and go and go.

Received my snow blower by UPS Ground on Wed 1-6-10 - ordered on 1-1-10!

Assembling it was simple, with the enclosed instructions. Using it was also simple.

I wish the plug attachment point had a 3-pin male plug instead of the 2-pin as provided, even if grounding was not done - with heavy gloves on, out in the cold, the power cord orientation would have been much easier.

I also ordered the US Arctic 100 ft cable - am disappointed because, probably because it is so thick (12-gauge) it IS very stiff to use.

The snow blower works as advertised I have borrowed a neighbor's gas machine of a similar size - this works at least as well, with none of the hassles of the starting problems. The safety sequence to get it going is not too hard to follow, and is a necessary safety measure.

I was able to attack much heavier and higher snow than I thought the machine was labeled as capable of clearing, doing so judiciously, and the chute direction control crank worked very well - my neighbor's machine has a chute turned with a handle - not cranked - and often turned on its own.

I used this for a week after a heavy snowfall - am waiting for the next! No more shoveling!!

This is the best out of three snow blowers that I've ever bought.

I thought this was great. Starts every time. No constant pulling of a cord, and messing with the choke on a tempermental carbeurator. Quieter too. No smoke in your face and high gas bills.

I owned a new Lawn Boy and a used Toro and hated them both. If they ever started when you needed them, it took a lot of pulling and mixing gas and oil. Gas isn't cheap, nor is two-cycle engine oil.

This snow blower did what the gas-powered ones did. Most of the time, the fuel and oil plugged up the needle and seat, causing more time to be in the repair shop and none cleaning the snow off the drive way like it was suppose to do.

Only problem was buying a 14-amp, 14-gauge cord heavy enough for it. Just plug it in and go to it! : )
