Q: what is difference between auger and power propel system in snow blowers by Enza Pusillo from New Jersey on November 25, 2011
A: Enza - there is no difference. Auger-drive and power-propel are the same thing. The auger paddles will contact the surface being cleared of snow and this will help pull the snow blower in a forward direction. by Kriss, Product Expert
Q: What is the major difference between single-stage and two-stage snow blowers? I moved to Delaware last year so I'm new to the area. I think on a rough year we might see a 5 or 6 snowfalls, mostly under 6 inches. We might get the occasional snow of 12-19 inches, but that's a once a year or once every few years type event.
So, I don't want to buy a giant overkill snowblower, I'm just looking for a soild little snowblower, I think like the Toro Power Clear 418ZE (18").
I do have a pretty long driveway so I was also wondering how fast these little blowers clear the snow.
Thanks by Robert Boyce from Delaware on October 18, 2011
A: The difference between a single stage and a two stage is going to be size as well as and more importantly how the snow is brought into the and pushed out of the auger and chute. A single stage is going to bring in the snow with the auger and push it out the chute. The two stage will bring in the snow with the auger and it will send it back to the 2nd stage, which is the impeller and this would propel the snow out the chute. This gives you more distance on your throw of the snow.
My suggestion for you with your snow fall would be a single stage snow blower. These are great for the medium to light snow, but can also handle large snow as well, it would just take you longer, but can still get the job done.
The 418ZE is a great little unit, but you could also take a look at the 21" model as well. by Kriss, Product Expert
Q: CAN THE TORO 621 QZE MODEL38459 FIT IN THE BACK OF A SUV LIKE THE HONDA PILOT OR JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE? by Anonymous from New York on August 15, 2011
A: If you fold down the upper handle, any of the Toro single stage snow blowers will fit in the back of an SUV. The upper handle is easily folder down by simply loosening a knob on either side of the handle. by Kriss, Product Expert
The Toro Power Clear 418ZE is perfect for clearing walks and driveways down to the pavement with ease and throws snow up to 25 feet away. The compact size also makes the model very easy to maneuver and store.
The Toro Power Clear 418ZE features a Toro brand premium 4-cycle engine with a convenient electric start system. No pulling on a starter rope - just plug in, push the starter button and off you go! These engines have been tuned to provide optimal performance, and will deliver power faster when you need it most.
The Toro Power Clear 418ZE is engineered with the Toro patented Power Curve® System. The curved rotor and inverted funnel housing moves more snow in less time and virtually eliminates clogging. The rubber auger paddles help move the snow blower forward while cleaning down to the pavement.
The Toro Power Clear 418ZE is also backed by Toro's 2-year full coverage warranty and two-year Guaranteed to Start promise.

Let Me Down
I bought this blower to save myself and my husbands backs. We have a long drive and it takes a lot out of us to shovel. This blower worked like a charm the first time I used it. But the second and third times I needed it, it WOULD NOT START! To say I'm angry is putting it mildly. As soon as I finish this review I have to go out with a shovel again! I'm so sorry I wasted money on this item!

The $399 Blower That Could
I live in Northern Westchester County in NY about 45 miles north of Manhattan. We get more snow than NYC with every storm. My goal was to buy a good, reliable machine and not spend $700-$1,200. With a very wide, but not too long paved driveway, I wanted a single-stage system. So far this winter we have had 3 storms, with a fourth coming this afternoon.
The first storm took me 30 minutes to clear my driveway, we got about 5 inches. Nice! The second storm, I went out with about 6 inches of snow and again cleared it in about 30 minutes, but the storm was just getting started. The next morning after 18 total inches, 12" remaining from my first clearing, it took me about an hour to clear the driveway.
The machine works well. In real heavy snow, it usually take two "tries" to clear to the driveway. The first I push to get 80% and then when I go over it again, I lift the back and let the machine do all the work and clear to the driveway.
In snow less than 5 inches, this Toro clears and shoots just like it should. In real wet snow, it doesn't "throw" the snow as far as with dryer snow.
It is easy to start with the electric push button start. On the rare occasion when I misjudge the power of the blower and try to clear too much, the engine has stopped, like at the end of the driveway when the snow plow from the street has created a huge pile. The pull start works on the first pull.
The mechanics and chute are easy to manipulate.
First year with this, and so far it was worked very well. No more sore back from shoveling. Definitely a smart buy for the money.

Great Machine
Ordering was a breeze and so much more convenient than driving everywhere to see if they had this blower in stock (which is wasn't in most places). The blower works great and is really easy to start and use. I haven't needed to use the electric start at all since it starts on the first easy pull! I would recommend this to anyone.

Toro Snowblower
This is the best blower we have ever purchased! We have a large blower that doesn't compare to the job this smaller unit does. It throws slush and even the water that has has pooled under the slush. My husband couldn't be happier and I ran it myself one night when he was at work. It is light weight and has lots of power. We are both in our 60's and so pleased with our blower. Fast delivery right to our door! Easy to put together. Started on the second pull.

Works fine. Clears the snow pretty well. Setup was easy but the manual was not good. The oil filler is down low and horizontal so adding oil with gas in the tank is tricky and potentially messy. The plug in for the electric start is on the ground and a little hard to reach. If both of those things could be accessed from the top it would be a really sweet little machine. That said, it's easy to start and clears the snow pretty well

One Small Issue
We used the snowblower for the first time yesterday. All in all we were very pleased.
One issue came up and that was the gas cap. It came off and we had a difficult time getting it back on. We will be using it again today so hopefully we will not have the same problem.

My Very First Ever Snow Blower!
Was so happy that the electric start feature works perfectly every time. Throws the snow plenty far from the driveway. Also love the fact that it takes regular unleaded gas without having to add anything else to the tank.

Love My Toro!!
I am a healthy 72 yr. old female with a short driveway that needs snow removal. I had been paying a nice sum for snow removal, so decided that I needed just a simple blower that I could handle. That is exactly what I have, an excellent snow blower with an electric start that I don't have to use because one pull & off we go.
I am pleased with my Toro, but extremely pleased with Snow Blowers Direct. The shipping was fast, good communication & I would recommend this company to anyone.
Thank you much, Kriss.

Surprisingly Neat Little Snow Blower
I have used it twice now (6 inch and 3 inch wet New England snow) This unit has squeegee/scoop blade inside that lifts the snow up from the sidewalk up into the blade- this is actually kind of neat because I have used it in grass areas and it goes on top of the grass and removes the snow without digging it all the grass and dirt up.
This unit is great for sidewalks and paths take your time maybe go back over it. I have had a huge unit before that was self propelled both forward and reverse and if you were not careful you could dig up broken sidewalk, bricks and such- that would cause problems upon discharge and small sidewalks were difficult to maneuver the bigger unit.
Now that is where this one has an advantage you just spin it around with little space needed. You can pick it up and put it in a small truck, SUV, or caravan and do you elderly neighbors walkways or even on the porch close to the door. It is good on gas too. My only "complaint", if you call it that, is that it's pretty loud for a little unit (but I'm mostly deaf anyhow so don't bother me any that its loud). Starts up very easy not much effort to pull (didn't even use the electric starter yet).

Reservations At First, Satisfied After Learning Proper Handling
Our very first snow we used this new unit was high, wet, and coming down heavy -- worse snow we've seen in a few seasons. Guessing it was about 8 to 10-inches worth. This being our very first snow blower, we needed to get a "feel" for operations. My wife's thought was it should act like a self-propelled lawn mower. She was disappointed on initial use and wanted to return for an upgrade to a two-stage. Unit didn't even have an hour on the clock.
After a few different practice runs, learned not to take a single "power run" non-stop, but rather, smaller "bite size" passes on really heavy, packed snow. Our neighbor has a two-stage but even they were bogging down. After clearing the initial dump, maintaining the clearing was pretty easy like some of the Website videos with 3-inches down.
Pretty happy with this unit so far, does the job. The electric start is handy for the initial start-up although pull start works fine too, especially after the unit is warmed up. Some co-workers shared they too have a similar single-stage and it works for them too. Very happy with the help and Support provided by Snow Blowers Direct. Recommended product and vendor.

Just In Time Present!
Bought this for my husband for Christmas. It sat in neighbors garage for about 3 wks before the big day. We had snow the day after Christmas and it worked great. There was a mixture of heavy snow and some layers of ice, but this machine took care of it.
The chute clogged a few times because of the ice layers, but other than that, worked great. Fast delivery and no tax.
Highly recommend this Toro and this company!

I just got the 418ze 4 cycle and we had about 2 inches of the white stuff.
Started up right away nothing like going through all the hassle of the 2 -stroke.
It did the same job cleaning right down to the pavement.
I would give it 5 stars

Where's The Snow?
Everything Snow Blowers Direct stated is true. No sales tax and free shipping. I received my 18" Toro Power Clear in two business days and opened it right away. Assembly was so easy I had my 5-year-old daughter "assist" me.
I started the machine twice to familiarize myself with the machine and it did not take more then two pulls to start. This machine is the perfect size to clear my three car driveway and sidewalk. However, I'm still waiting for the snow so I can use my new snow blower. I have not had the opportunity to observe the performance of the Toro Power Clear (Model 38282) myself but I anticipate that I will be more then satisfied.

Excellent Tool And Service
In preparation for a typical New York winter, I found Snow Blowers Direct.
They sell excellent equipment and had absolutely FANTASTIC customer service.
The machine arrived within a few short days of placing the order.

Great Value For Money
I came from Netherlands to Minnesota for my work. My colleagues told me it could snow quite a bit out here. Indeed about 15 inches couple of weeks ago. I started to shovel manually but gave up after the half the driveway. I also have to setup an ice rink in the backyard as big as half a basketball court.
After having seen the neighbors with their snow blowers I went searching on the Internet. Soon came at snowblowersdirect.com. Very comprehensive and informative site. After some research mostly from the same site decide to buy the 1 stage Toro for all the good review it had.
Machine was in stock and got it delivered in 48 hours even after this weekend of a lot of snow around the Minneapolis area. User manual was simple and effective and after filling the machine with oil and gas. It started very easily after two pulls.
Runs pretty smooth and was powerful enough to blow the already slightly melting heavy snow. Used it a second time on the ice rink after about 8 inches of snow. Had to lift it over the side boards and because it is so heavy you can do it with one pair of hands.
It was easy to maneuver and again did its work perfectly.
Haven't used the electric start option as it starts easily with the manual starter. When not used I store it in garage, I don't know what happens if you keep it outside with starting and remaining snow on machine. So great product and great shop.

Toro 418 Ze
Purchased this primarily for light snowfall since I have an Ariens 2-Stage for heavier snowfall. If your thinking about whether you should go with/without the electric start to save some money - I can confidently say you really won't need the electric start I have the 418 (w/ electric start) and it starts very-very easy on the first-pull. The "Power Curve" auger throws snow pretty well and does a great job cleaning down to the pavement. As with most single-stage their auger is designed to propel the unit forward, so for someone using a SS the first time remember to tip the unit forward so the wheels are slightly off the ground so that the auger contacts the pavement and "drives" the unit forward.
The 418 did a great job propelling itself through the snow, the only time I found myself pushing was at the EOD stuff. I've used it in snow above the intake height and it handled it pretty well - easing it into the heavy snow piles (EOD stuff) letting the auger work at its own pace prevented stall out. The little 87cc has no throttle adjustment so it runs at full speed - engine performance is impressive handling all the snow I threw at it. If your looking to purchase your first snow blower and only get an average snowfall of less than 8" at a time the 418 should suit your needs just fine, however if you get the occasional 12-24" snow fall it may be too much for this little machine and you might be better off with a 2-Stage within your budget.

Purchase Of Snow Blower
Everything went very smoothly, ordering and receiving on time. The only problem I had was there was a small dent on the side.
I didn't call in because it was not really hurting anything. My only worry is that we have not used it yet, there has been no snow since we purchased the snow blower.
If there is anything wrong when we do use it, I am hoping the small dent will not be a big deal.
Everything else was great.

Very Satisfied
If this moves snow as easy and well as everything so far, I am going to hire myself out to the neighbors. Shipping, excellent, 2 day delivery. Setup, so simple you don't need the manual but nice reference. Great idea by Toro to furnish an extra key. Prep for using, (gas & oil) a no brainer. Chute adjustment simple. Starting with pull or electric, immediate. Compact for storage too. From other info I have gathered the Toro 2 year warranty is a plus. Don't like and am not looking forward to snow, but will welcome 1 or 2 so I can play with my new toy.

Toro 18" Power Clear
This unit has performed beyond expectations since its arrival! Have never used the electric- start feature- starts first pull every time so far.
Used it to clear a skating area on the pond (our primary reason for buying it) and the 100 ft path to the water, through 12-15" of snow. Can't say it was an effortless event, but the little Toro did the job, never faltered.
Also used it through 12-15" of snow to clear paths to bird feeders, to the shed where it's stored (unheated, so far down to -17 degrees). Following instructions- prime twice, close choke, pull starter- and it's running!
Great little snowblower- even handled the last 8" heavy, wet snowfall adequately. Didn't throw it 25 ft, but moved it where it needed to be, and performed very well.
Good value, from a great seller! Ordering from SNOW BLOWERS DIRECT was a pleasant experience, good price,
excellent customer service- nice folks to deal with.

Purchased my Toro 180 Electric Start in Nov. 2010. It worked great the first two times. On the third try I had gas leaking all over my garage floor. Very disappointing on a brand new machine. As Advertised
There is so little truth in advertising these days with very little exceptions. The Toro #38282 however is a terrific one!. Just purchased this little dynamo in January 2011 apparently in the nick of time. After enduring record snow last year in Philly we decided to break down and purchase the little Toro unit.
This machine is small in name only. We had the blower delivered to us last week and it didn't take long to put it to the test. Two days ago in the latest Noreaster to pound Philly we had 17.3 inches dumped on us in less than 8 hours! With such a deep snowfall I was quite skeptical at the blowers ability to handle such an amount!
However, after one quick push of the electric start button the blower purred like a kitten and proceeded to make short work of over a foot of snow on both my sidewalk and double width driveway! Not having the self-propelled option did require some effort to negotiate the mild grade of my driveway but this was no harder than mowing the lawn in summer.
In summation, my heart and back are very grateful for this great little machine that now makes winter a little more bearable!

Just Great - Does The Job!
First of all, am a newbie at snow blowers so I relied greatly on reviews and feedback from various consumer websites. I have to admit that Snow Blowers Direct is one of the sites I found most useful in deciding which equipment to get. Plus, once I knew which model, ordering from them was hassle free. Customer service staff were responsive and really knew their product line.
With respect to the snow blower itself, all I can say is that it performed wonders during the last two major snow storms here in NJ. I was hesitant at first whether it could take the 14-16 inches of snow on my 2-car driveway. A couple of my neighbors have the 2-cycle models and were running into problems, so I thought mine would conk out after a few feet. Boy, was I wrong! It did great and cleared the snow in just 10 minutes! As advertised, it does throw the snow quite a distance. As I have a sloped driveway, it being auger-propelled made my task easier. I even got positive nods from neighbors! What more can I say!

Wow
All I can say is "Wow!!!!!!" What a deal I got. I bought this for my mom just before the December 2010 snow storm. She was able to get a neighbor to help her dig out after she told them her son bought her a snow blower. I would have went bigger if I knew how bad the winter would be this year but the Toro held it’s own.
I’m so glad I found Snow Blowers Direct. Their great price and fast delivery was a life saver. Thank you for putting me back on top with Mom. With 7 siblings it’s tough out there.

Pleasantly Surprised
I purchased this Toro as a Christmas gift for my husband. After last night's snowstorm (4 inches) hubby used the Toro for the first time this morning. We were pleasantly surprised on how well and fast it cleared the driveway (15 minutes). Then hubby did our (two elderly) neighbors driveways on both sides of us. They were pleasantly surprised too! I just hope it keeps working like a charm!

Good... When It Starts
Got this unit the first model year (112010). Mine's a 38282. Worked great the first few times, except for a fairly strong gas smell. Easy to use and handled 10" without a problem. Threw the snow plenty far (maybe even too far - into my neighbor's driveway!).
My trouble began after a Spring storm. The unit wouldn't start. After a bit of wrestling (new fuel, carb cleaner, check the plug, etc), I finally called Toro. They said that they hadn't heard of any problems with it and recommended I take it in for service. Being a do-it-yourself kind of guy, I decided that it must be something I'm doing wrong, so I wrestled with it for a few more hours. Well, after a bit more web research, I found that some folks had been having similar problems - seems like the valve in the carb likes to stick either open or closed. A couple weeks later I decided to throw in the towel and take it in for service. Well, the first place I called said, "Yeah, the needle valve corrodes and sticks due to a manufacturing error. Bring it in and we'll fix it under warranty." Well, thanks Toro, for being up on your products and wasting all my time!
The warranty fix seemed to work, and I figured I have my thrower back for the next season. Three months later (July) I finally got the recall notice in the mail. Thanks again, Toro, for helping me with my Snow Thrower in JULY. Better late than never?
So the story continued last month after our first big snowfall. Filled the tank and got ready to go... and gas started dripping from the carb. Stuck needle valve AGAIN. I had done the recommended "Summerization", so I figure it's got to be corroded again? Or is just a poorly designed carb? Called Toro for "help" and got nothing but a girl who just couldn't wait to get off the phone with me, even though I was being quite polite. Really!
Bottom line: When it works, it works great. There seem to be some serious design flaws with this unit's carburetor. Maybe they fixed them for the latest model year? I bought this unit in part for the Toro name, but have been sadly disappointed.
Being a do-it-yourself kind of guy, I decided that it must be somet... more

I am pleased with the speedy delivery and easy assembly of this snow blower. Had a 3 inch snow the day after i received it and it worked great. I am 70 years old and the power clear feature sure made the job easy. . Bottom line no stress cleans up the mess .

Initial Review After One Storm
I purchased Toro 180E to clear two very large decks and a couple 20+ foot walkways. First chance to use it was storm between Christmas and New Year's week. Dry snow, somewhere about 10" deep total. Toro was used when snow was about 6" and again at end of storm. Easy to assemble and start. Adding oil was easy first time because no gas in the tank. When I need to refill could be tricky, oil plug is low on the back of the model near the line of the wheels. Gas in the tank may come out the vent when tipped.
Toro 180E is fairly easy to push into the new snow and allow auger to grab a mouthful. The Toro throws the snow far enough and the easy adjustments for the output throat allowed me to quickly make adjustments as needed. By the end of the storm the snow had gotten a bit more water weight to it.
The Toro is pretty light and the wheels fairly small. When pushing it into the heavier snow it was all me giving it the momentum it needed to ingest the snow. It's not a design defect, it simply is the trade-off you get for having a nimble snowblower versus the heavy duty type that can get through any snow type but is just too big and bulky for jobs like my deck.
I was pleasantly surprised at the gas consumption. One tank did both decks twice and the walkways once. Also it was light enough to carry over a couple 3 foot snow banks made by the guy I hire to plow so I could clear the mailbox. This was the next day after the storm snow had time to pack itself down and the auger struggled a bit but generally did a good job.

Disappointed-still Leaking Gas
After having a Toro snow thrower for many years, I decided to replace it when it wore out with the Toro Power Clear 180. Purchased it on Dec. 12, 2010 when all the snow hit Northeast Ohio.
Machine was a little hard starting but nothing to make an issue about. Used it 2 times within two days to plow a good 9-10 inches of snow out of my driveway each time. It worked great, had plenty of power and I was happy that I bought it!
Then came the disappointment. After the snow had stopped and the machine sat in the garage for a few weeks it started leaking gas all over the garage floor. Found out that this model had a recall for this problem earlier in the year for the carburetor needle corroding. My unit's serial# was way past those in the recall and should not have had the problem but it did. After contacting Toro I was told to take it to a service center and have it fixed. Yes, a brand new $400 unit 2 weeks old and I'm suppose take it in and wait for them to fix it during snow season.
Well, I did take it back to where I bought it and returned it within the 30 days. Really liked the unit but had no trust in getting another, opted for another major brand.

Toro
I used my machine a few times over the span of a few days as we got hit hard with a Noreaster on the east coast.
I am happy with the machine as far as moving blowing the snow, although starting it up takes longer and longer every time I need to restart it.
My biggest concern is the smell. I am not sure if all gas models smell so much but this one reeks of gas so bad that I cannot store it in my garage, and my clothes stink of gas too.
I did not see any leaks so I am not sure if it is defective or if this the way this machine is supposed to be.

Toro 180 Power Clear
Living in Virginia, we're not use to needing a snow blower. However, over the last couple of seasons I had wished I had one. After a lot of research, I didn't want a snow blower that was "overkill" for our geographic location.
The transaction and shipping from Snow Blowers Direct was prompt and hassle-free. Also, the timing couldn't have been any better. I got a knock on my door when the UPS truck was in my driveway during our first snowfall (about 4 inches).
I filled it with oil and gas. It started right up with the electric start and the driveway was done in very little time. I'm very satisfied with my first snow blower and the price was excellent compared with local store prices.
No complaint with Toro performance or quality of this product. However, I'm sure a larger amount of snow (I.e. Greater than 8 inches) may require a two stage model.

Works Great As Advertised — Except For Bent Wheel
My Toro Power Clear 1880E Snow Blower arrived within 4 days after ordering on the internet. It was for my wife as my heart condition eliminates my use, so that is why I chose the single-stage snow blower.
It was a perfect snow blower for 3 weeks as it prevented further snowfall we had set a new snowfall record for November in Spokane of 26 inches, which was about 12 inches more than we had all last winter.
Since Christmas we have had about another 12 inches and so my wife has finally been using her new Toro Power Clear Snow Blower with great satisfaction. I deducted one rating point because the left wheel is angled, seeming to have a bent axle bar at the end. I haven't had the opportunity to try and take it to a Toro dealer.

When I placed my order for the snow blower, I was very impressed with the speed and fast delivery of the unit within days. Help Came When Necessary
After going through a very delicate surgery, my husband decided to purchase a snow blower because he could no longer rely on his own shoveling.
The night of a blizzard, our son came over and plowed for us and my husband also decided to share the blower with our kind neighbors who had helped us previously.

Received the snow thrower in very prompt order. It arrived UPS in good shape.

Poor Instructions
It is unclear from the instructions how much oil to put in at start - they give you a 12oz bottle but apparently that is too much. Unit started once but didn't run well. The next day it wouldn't start at all. I pulled the plug and cleaned it and drained some oil. It finally started and ran. Seemed to work okay on the 2 inches of snow we got. Time will tell if it works on deeper stuff.
Just wish the directions stated exactly how much oil to add. Would have saved me a lot of hassle.

Not The Best Toro
I purchased this Toro over two years ago--nothing but problems after ten hours of use.
It would never start--did all the necessary maintenance to no avail. The seals were bad as my mechanic stated to me today and the cost to repair was $250. Never again will I ever buy a two-stroke blower.
I'm a Toro brand believer, as I have a Zero Turn Mower which I love--this blower is a POS. Had spark and got gas, but compression was 60...cheap.

New Snow Blower
I am sorry to report that I am not as happy with my shiny new Toro as I was with my old Craftsman. Why?
1) The Toro doesn't clean the pavement near as well as the Craftsman. Granted there was a bit of ice with this first snowfall so perhaps that had something to do with it.
2) The Toro is much more difficult to move . The Craftsman had a corkscrew type blade which seemed to help pull the machine along. The forward motion of the Toro seems to be all me, which I cannot understand because it would appear that the blade would help to pull it along.
3) The bolts holdng the chute in place were way too short. I use the past tense since they fell out with the first run and had to be replaced.
The only really positive thing I can say about my Toro is that it's easier than shoveling.

I wish I could give you an opinion......It's ready to go, but we've had NO SNOW!!!!!! I Bought this model to replace a monster blower on tracks, which was difficult for me to maneuver. I like the size of the Toro. I used my neighbor's last winter which prompted me to get one for myself.

Great Snowblower
Got this unit fast by UPS.. This unit works great. I had a 1980 S-200 that was replaced by this Toro Power Clear 180E.
It was great, finished my driveway without a problem. Went over and did the 3 other neighbor's driveways too. I was done in about 45 minutes.
My only wish is that this unit had the slider on the handle to move the chute back and forth.

Wow - Great Cross Border On-time Delivery
What I am most impressed with is how fast we got the snow blower across the US border.
The machine is great too. Started right up and does a great job with Calgary's dry snow.
I am very glad I did not buy the giant 2 stage unit as this is plenty big enough for our needs.
I can easily carry it as well.
I only used the unit for one 6 inch snow fall so far - for about 90 minutes, but so far so good.
I was able to handle drifts up to 12 inches deep with a bit of back and forth work.
I think the unit could benefit from a slightly larger motor but all and all I like it.
I already have neighbours asking where to get one.

The hardest thing was just putting the handles and parts together, but once we got that and put the oil and some gas in, it started very easily with just pull cord. No carburetor leaks like some of the past reviewers said. I have a newer model and Toro got most of the bugs out of it. There are some flimsy plastic lever parts however.
The choke lever looks like it might break off after some long usage. However, the blower is powerful enough for average snows we get here from about 3 to 9 inches. After that it might take more work to clear.
One more thing. Let's say you want to remove the spark plug wire for maintenance or storage. looks like there is a hood over the plug and the manual doesn't explain exactly how to get it off and reach the plug. I welcome suggestions on this matter. Otherwise good blower for the money exceptional value.
SBD Response: For this snow blower, the spark plug is going to be directly behind the machine and will have a wire attached just above where it would say OHV on the engine. This should be rather easy to access. It is also figure 11 in the manual.

I bought this snowblower last year. It worked great right from the start. But then the carborator cover screws fell off. They sent me a new set, no charge, but now I have to have someone put it on for me.
Now this year it won't even start. So I'll have to pay someone to fix it.

Great Buy
This machine fits the bill. I have a flat double driveway roughly 100 feet long, and there is no problem in pushing the machine.
However, at the approach, there is a small incline, where it was a little difficult pushing the machine uphill. If your drive is inclined, I would recommend a self propelled unit.
I should have bought one years ago. With six inches of snow, I can clear the drive and walkway to the front porch in thirty minutes!

This unit replaced a very similar Toro I had for 15 years. This model has an electric start which works like a charm.
I used it to clear a 2 foot snow on our 70 foot driveway and did the same for a neighbor.
I read some other reviews and already was aware of its limitations on large hills etc. but find it does a very good job at saving my heart and back and at a price that makes sense for an area that usually does not have the giant storms we did this year.
I like not mixing fuel and oil which I needed to do on the previous model and changing the oil on this one was simple. Highly recommended for anyone not wanting to spend a lot on power etc. they do not need.

This has been the worst winter in a while. I ordered my blower and got it within days!
I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews. I opened it up, within minutes had it together added oil was ready to go. I figured no more snow, since now I was ready.
I was wrong- we got slammed again. I broke out the Toro and I have to say, I set the choke, primed it twice, gave it a pull, and it started right up!
It's a strong little blower- no fuel leaks like I have read about in other reviews. If there was any down side it did have a little trouble with a snow / slush mix; we had about 2" of slush under the 12" of snow.
I just had to go a little slower with it, but this thing was throwing snow across the street!
I am very satisfied with it. Snow Blowers Direct.com was also a positive first-time experience.

Great Little Machine
After my 6.5 HP Ariens died, I bought the Toro Power Clear 180 after getting slammed with two feet of snow.
Snow Blowers Direct had it to my front door in just a few days. After a couple uses, I am very pleased with this machine. It has great power and is very easy to maneuver.
It is not chain drive so you can vary the speed according to the snow. Also, I borrowed a Toro Powerlite before I bought this and the Power Clear definitely has more power.
The best part is it is light and I can put it in the back of a vehicle easily.
Unless you regularly get over a foot of snow or have a lot of uphill that requires chain drive, this is a great snowblower.

Very Nice Snow Blower
I've been looking to buy a snow blower for some time. I am 65 years old and shoveling snow is getting harder with each passing year.
I went online and found Snow Blowers Direct. I saw just what I was looking for- a single-stage Toro 18" Power Clear. It's not too heavy at just 58 lbs, and it's a 4 cycle, so no mixing gas and oil, and it has an electric start.
I ordered it on Sunday night and it was at my house Wednesday morning. What great service by Snow Blowers
Direct.
I live in the Baltimore area, and recently we were hit by two back to back blizzards amounting to 50 inches
of snow. Now granted, this blower is not made for that kind of snow, but going out and clearing the walks a couple
of times during the snow worked great.
This machine is easy to start, one to two pulls, and easy to use. And it throws snow where you want it. I highly recommend this Toro.
My neighbor was so impressed with it he bought one too.
One thing to consider- I bought the electric start model, but the engine starts so easy with the pull cord I don't
think I'll ever need the electric starter; but it's still nice to have as a back up.

Used 3 Times And Will Not Start
I purchased this new for light use. I used it 3 times with new gas then it died and will not start. It does not appear that fuel is getting to the carb. I've read many other users with a similar problem, blaming the needle valve.
Avoid this blower at all cost. Reliability is awful.

You can mention Service Bulletin 81 that addresses this situation.

I got this delivered to my door two days after it was ordered. We have gotten 28+ inches of snow over the last two weeks and my 200 foot driveway was full of hard packed snow/ice.
Each morning we seemed to have gotten an additional 2-3" of light fluffy snow. This Toro did a great job! I can actually see my cement driveway again!
It took a few passes, but it cleaned right to the bottom as well as chewed up some larger hard packed snow/ice chunks. It's easy to operate, easy to start! I would buy again.
It has already been used by my neighbors as well.
Customer service at SBD was amazing. We spent about 15-20 minutes on the phone discussing which model would be best for my needs! Will buy again; and I also recommended your site to KDKA - A Pittsburgh based TV/radio show when they were looking for places to buy snow blowers.
It was a live AM talk show and the screener put me right through. SO, you might be getting a few calls from the western PA area.

Ordered my Toro on the Tuesday before Northern Virginia/DC's big "Snowmageddon" Storm (26 inches) and unfortunately didn't get it until the following Monday.
I really hoped that two day delivery estimate was true. One day of indecision on what to buy cost me hours on the snow shovel. Two days later here comes another smaller storm with about 8 inches and 2-3 foot drifts.
Never having owned a snow blower I was eager to give the blower its first work-out. Using the pull starter it started up with a couple of easy pulls.
This little blower easily dealt with the 8 inches, throwing the snow far enough that I was concerned about getting the snow in my neighbor's driveway. Once I was done with my drive I was off to help my closest neighbors with their drives and sidewalks.
I'm pleased with the purchase and haven't experienced the problems I saw in the earlier reviews. Just wish I had this little blower to deal with "Snowmageddon".
SBD RESPONDS: Priority shipment guarantees that Snow Blowers Direct will move your unit to the front of the line and it will get on a truck the same day you order it. Our transit times are estimates based on what the shippers tell us.
Unfortunately, we can't make the delivery trucks drive any faster; nor can we force them through snow-blocked roads or other hazards.
What we can do is make the tracking information available along with contact information for each carrier. If your order has shipped via freight you can always pick the order up at the shipper's terminal to save a day or two delivery time.

This Is A Great Snowblower
We have had the largest amount of snow I have seen in years in 2010. My father is older and has heart trouble so I purchased this snowblower for him.
He loved it so much I purchased one for myself and have been very grateful to have it in the last few weeks. It works great for a residential area.
I have a really long driveway and it works well for me. I would order a larger one for a bigger lot.
It starts on the first pull. I have not needed the electric start function, but am glad to know I have it as a back up.

I Love My Toro!!
I hadn't had the opportunity to write a review yet because we haven't had any snow here in SE Michigan.
I was thinking of telling you my new Toro was the best insurance policy I'd purchased because we hadn't had any snow...until today.
We already have 4-inches with another 5-9 expected overnight. I have an electric start blower, so she started up immediately. I did the driveway in 15 minutes.
Our driveway will hold 8 parked cars so it would take me an hour to do the driveway by hand, but usually I did it 3 different shifts. Today I was praising God and Toro for making my life so wonderful.
I hate snow, but now it's bearable and I actually look forward to re-doing the driveway again tomorrow. I'm a 63-yr old widow, but this snowblower was so easy to handle and lightweight too. Thank you Toro!!!
I also liked dealing with SnowBlowersDirect. I ordered on a Thursday evening and received my snowblower on Monday. Great service, easy ordering process, and the assembly of the snowblower was also easy.

But this weekend it snowed again, and the unit worked well for a few minutes and then the engine died. The carburetor has been leaking ever since and I cannot locate the source of the leak. It only stays running for 30 seconds before dying again.
I will have to have someone come and work on it. I have the sales receipt so I guess I will call the seller, but this is a pain to have to do after only using the unit once!
SBD RESPONDS: You may want to check with the folks at Toro first to see if they have a simple solution. They can be reached toll free at (888) 384-9939.

I purchased this unit for my husband as a Christmas present. We just had out our first big snow, 5 inches.
My husband followed the directions to start the Toro and it started right up! He took a couple of swipes and decided to use the shovel on a more difficult area to get to.
He left the snowthrower running and within a minute it died. He has not been able to get it started since. This is day 2 of falling snow.
The directions say to let it set for 40 minutes, which he has done, and still it will not start! He had to shovel the driveway yesterday and today.
I have read such wonderful reviews about Toro and cannot understand why we are having such problems. I am soooo disappointed since this was a gift for my husband.

Your shipment was received promptly and perfectly.
The young man on the phone who assisted us could not have been more helpful.
There has been no snow accumulation since its arrival, but we know it will fill the bill.

65 And Hoping For More Snow
I am so very pleased with my Toro. I am 65 years old, in good health, but worn out after shoveling snow.
It was after the second blast we had that I went online looking for a snowblower. I found the Snow Blowers Direct.com and was pleased to see they had the Toro.
I had read a review on the Toros some time back. Anyway, I ordered one for me and one for my son who lives in Leawood. I was a little scared to start it up, but to my surprise it started so easy.
I had absolutely no problem blowing the snow and ice off my drive and off the neighbor's drive. It handles extremely easy, and if you raise the handle just a little bit, it's like it is self-propelled.
I highly recommend it and I only hope we have at least one more good snow so I can use it again.

Leaks Gasoline!!!
I bought the electric start model Dec 22, used only twice, and today discovered it is leaking gasoline on my garage floor.
I emailed Toro, they said to take it in to the dealer. Now I have to talk my wife into letting me use her minivan to haul a machine that is leaking gasoline, and take time out of my day to do it.
Oh, and the shop said it will take a week to fix, let's hope it doesn't snow in the meantime.
Do not buy this machine. The external parts are cheap plastic, it doesn't plow down to the pavement, and oh yeah, it leaks gasoline after two uses. I bought a Toro on their reputation for quality. Big disappointment.

Wonderful Little Blower
I purchased this snow blower during the Christmas holiday and received it the next week. We have had an unusually hard winter this year.
I have used it several times now and it is a wonderful little blower. It was easy to set up and really there isn't much involved in setting it up.
You have to install the deflector shoot and put the bolts in that hold the handles in place. Just add the engine oil and it is ready to run.
It has a powerful little engine and it has blown snow higher than the intake with no problem. I have the electric start, but it starts so easy that I haven't taken the time to use it.
It is light weight and easy to use just as advertised. It truly is a great snow blower. I don't write reviews often but when I get something that surpasses my expectations I like to let others know about it.
If you want a great snow blower at a great price that does a great job, this is the one to get.

Great Bang For The Buck!
Toro Power Clear 180® (18") 87cc Electric Start Single-Stage Snow Blower
Cons
1.) Does not like wet snow. The unit does not have the power or the necessary second stage for throwing heavy snow.
2.) Will not effectively move snow deeper than 6 to 8 inches in a single pass.
3.) The wheels feel off. The wheel and axle system on this unit was in adequate. I found it necessary to replace the axle caps with washers and cotter keys (this required drilling a hole in each end in the axle to accept the cotter key).
4.) The engine bogs down under excessive load resulting in the necessity of pulling the unit back and allowing the engine RPM to stabilize before continuing (see 1 and 2).
Pros
1.) Both the pull start and electric start worked perfectly. The unit was easy to start. Turn the ignition on, set the choke, a few pumps of the fuel primer, and a short quick pull of the cord and we were off. I would recommend allowing the unit to warn up for a minute or two.
2.) Light weight, light weight, light weight, I am always leery of turning over the controls of a piece of equipment like this to someone who does not possess a certain level of strength. I felt good about letting my girl friend use this one- all 100lbs of her.
3.) Ease of use and reliability. This unit performed wonderfully and has done so for several seasons.
Summary: Buy the right equipment for the job and the user. This is not a commercial two stage monster that clears 3' of snow in a single pass and throws it 200' into the neighbor’s driveway. It is a low cost snow thrower for areas of the world that receive light to moderate snow fall a couple times a year.
I will buy another one if this one ever dies and is not serviceable (which I highly doubt will ever happen).

Don't Get This If You Have A Sloping Driveway!!
I just got my Toro after doing a lot of reading of the reviews and checking with a variety of consumer guides. All spoke highly of the quality of manufacture, the long life and the ease of starting.
Well my unit arrived last night here in West Vancouver as did the first snow of the season. I assembled the unit last night - pretty straightforward and easy. Put the oil in the crankcase, filled the tank with gas and she started on the second pull. Great!!
This morning I was greeted with about 2 - 3" of wet snow. I fired up the unit - it started on the second pull like last night, and off to the driveway. Well, my first surprise was as I tried to go up the driveway. I have a slope and curve that leads out of the garage and up the drive way onto the street.
While trying make my way up, the unit slid to the side and was very hard to control. With this unit the rubber scrapper blade supplies the motive force for driving the unit and it is pretty hard to control, as the only way to manage traction is to teeter it up using the rear wheels thereby lifting the rubber blades.
Clearing wet snow was hard for the unit to discharge. It appeared to plug with wet slush for a moment and then sputter and spit finally throwing it about 10 feet. When on level ground the unit performed better, casting the snow about 18 feet and leaving a clear, clean but narrow (18") path.
My advice - If you have any elevation change consider a 2-stage like I should have done. Now I have to face Momma who is upset with my costly mistake.
I think the unit would be fine for a small flat driveway or walkway. Definitely not good enough for my sloping driveway with wet snow.
Hope this helps!!
