Q: Does this snowblower have to be put together? OR does it come assembled?
by Susan Fisher from New York on July 30, 2011
A: Susan - the Toro single stage snow blowers come "partially" assembled. You would need to fold up and tighten the handle and assemble and attach the discharge chute. Assembly should take about 20 to 30 minutes, and you would need a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench or a socket set. by Kriss, Product Expert
Q: Hi Kriss, Confirm for me that this model 38588 is gas only? by Wash from New York on July 01, 2011
A: This would be a gas only snow blower. The 421 signifies the four cycle.
Thanks,

Q: Hi I just have one question this model, 421QR it does not need to mix gas and oil together right? Thank you by Gary from New York on May 26, 2011
A: You would be correct. These are 4 cycle units and 4 cycle would be gas and oil seperate. 2 cycle would be the gas and oil mix and this would be the 221 models.
Thanks,

Q: If I purchase a new Toro Model 38588, would the carburetor problem be fixed or would I still need to bring it in for service under the recall?
by HD from New York on May 20, 2011
A: Any units with problems have been fixed already, but we do not have any units where the serials tie into the recall carb problem. So you would not have to bring into service because if you did get a model with this problem it would have already been fixed.

Q: I know it is early and the summer but want to pruchase new snowthorwer. Does this model Toro Power Clear™ 421QR (21") 163cc Single-Stage Snow Blower w/ Quick Chute take gasoline only instead of the gas and oil mixture? by Tom Anderle from New York on May 11, 2011
A: The 421 would be gas only. Toro still has some two cycle blowers, but will not this coming season as they are going to a complete 4 cycle lineup.

Tough Winter Made Easy
I've used Toro single stage throwers for years. My first one lasted for over 12 years, but finally needed replacing 3 seasons ago. I replaced it with another Toro single stage, only this time a little stronger. The first and second season it was fine, but last season (out of warranty) it would throw snow no more than 3 feet once it warmed up. I had a belt replaced, and it worked fine for the next storm, which was the last of last season.
Figuring I was all set for this year, I started it up before the first snow and everything seemed fine. Half way through the first workout, which was about 8 inches of medium weight snow, again it only moved the snow a couple of feet, and labored at doing that. I checked the belt, clutch, etc., and all appeared fine.
Well we all know the kind of winter followed that first storm and finally, I was able to find a snow thrower online with Snow Blowers Direct, all local big box stores were out of stock. This time I opted for a single stage, but with the 4 cycle engine, eliminating the gas/oil mixture (what a relief), and so far, this is the best I've had. I thought twice about buying another Toro, but my first one was a gem, and after reading a review on SnowBlowersDirect.com, I thought I would give it another try. This one starts on the first pull, runs smooth, no noxious fumes, and is certainly strong enough for my corner house sidewalks and double-wide driveway.
It was delivered on time, and the only small issue I had was that the plastic handle on the choke had broken off during shipping. May have been slightly cracked during installation, and the slight jarring during shipping finished it off. The pieces were still in the box, and although I would like it replaced, it certainly did not hamper operations.
All and all, (so far), very satisfied.

I can't find anything wrong with it
Starts great at -10 below, throws snow a good distance, cleans down to pavement with the replaceable rubber blade. The snowblower is light weight, adjusts nozzle direction easily, I just can't find anything wrong with it !!!

No Longer Frustrated in Frankfort
In the worst of the major snowstorms of the 2011 winter, my two stage 5 HP tracked snowthrower died. I had tried to forgive over the recent years its clogging, the fact that it could not throw snow farther than a few feet, and that it was noisy, heavy to steer, and took up so much room in the garage.
The great neighbors let me borrow their Toro. It was small, had this Quick Chute feature that allowed me to direct the snow with one hand, it was fast and dealt with 12" of snow - plus the hardpack at the end of my driveway. The Toro was maybe one third the weight and size, started with the FIRST pull, and, because of its speed and power, was fun to operate.
I drove to Snow Blowers Direct and purchased the 163cc version (had to get larger than the neighbor's) with Quick Chute. I also decided against the electric start (no regrets - it always starts with minimal effort, never more than two pulls). It snowed a little more in that particular storm and I've had zero problems with any snowfall since to date.
The Toro 421QR fits on the rubber mat (no more puddles) and takes up minimal room (we have it between the two cars, ready to go). I no longer worry about being snowed in.

Second snowfall and doesn't work
This is my second review and the TORO is still a piece of junk. This is our second snowfall since receiving the 421QR and it won't run. It runs for a few seconds and stalls. Wait a few minutes and it starts but, stalls again after a few seconds. This is never ending. The machine has new gas, it's properly primed, and the choke is set correctly.
I got a lemon. Need to find a authorized TORO repair center. If that doesn't work, a good old 10 pound sledge will fix the problem. Luckily I have a plow that attaches to my lawn tractor and was able to move the snow.

Waiting for the big storm
So far the only snow we had was 3-12 inches, however the Toro started up with one pull and cleared my 3 car driveway and walkways around my house front and back in 45 min. All I can say is bring it on! I am ready.
The Toro cover is very well made and sturdy, it goes on and off easily I keep the snowblower outside near the back door so the cover is important, the people at Snow Blowers Direct got me the Toro in 3 days when none of the big box stores had anything in-stock and could not tell me when they would be getting any deliveries. Thank you Snow Blowers Direct.

Super blower
Excellent machine. Starts first pull every time--unbelievable but true! Uses up about a quarter of the gas of the comparable Toro 2-stroke, no smoke or smell, plenty of power, handled the 16 -20" snows this winter (2010-2011) with absolutely no difficulty.
Quick chute is easy to use and works perfectly to direct the snow where you want it to go. Assembly was easy. No faults. Really glad I sold my old Toro single stage 2 stroke

2 Stage performance, single stage weight
Works great- starts right up and has not bogged down yet through two Northeast storms. Used it up to 8 inches and 14 inches at the bottom of the driveway from plow build up. NO problems. Great blower if you don't want to deal with a big bulky two stage.

Terrible waste of money!
My Toro is a piece of junk! The machine looks good coming out of the box. My first problem started when I tried to put the handle in its extended position. The left end of the handle was bent approximately three inches from the end. I called Snow Blowers Direct about the problem and I was given the name of a authorized dealer. I did not want to bend the handle back into shape fearing it would void any warranty. I took it to the dealer who said I could bend it back myself and it would not void any warranty. I took the machine home and bent the handle back into shape.
Then I found another problem with the U-shaped handle lock. It was also bent. I took the machine back to the dealer and he was able to bend the U-shaped lock back into its proper shape. The dealer poured in some gas, I put in the oil and it started on the first pull. Two trips to the dealer in one day and 100 miles later I thought I had a fixed machine. One other interesting note, the dealer I was sent too was no longer a Toro dealer and hadn't been for over two and a half years. He did not charge me a fee. I did not know this until the repairs were made.
During the first snowfall that I could use the machine, I found additional problems. It started on the first pull, but the machine is not level with the cutting surface. It rocks back and forth and gives an uneven cut to the surface. The dominating cutting side is to the right. The wheels are another issue. Whoever installed them at the factory needs additional training. Each wheel is defective from the mold. The hole for the axle is not lined up with the axle. The actual plastic is bent from a horizontal position to the axle. Both wheels wobble back and forth when pushed.

Gas Leak from Carb (ongoing problem with Toro snow blowers)
Just like others, this machine 421QR was delivered and I did the setup and it started right up. Cleared my driveway and walk and parked it. A few hours later I smelled gas and went into the garage to find gas leaking onto my garage floor from the carb on this blower. I called Toro and they said I could get a warranty fix at a dealer and they gave me a number of a "dealer" that was disconnected. Tried others on my own but all too busy to take care of my gas leak.
So anyway. My previous Toro led me to buy this one and the features are nice, but a machine leaking gas in my attached garage is not worth $750. Then I googled the problem and found it was a problem for the last couple years? A company that does not care about it's quality? Toro must not want customers any longer. I will probably return mine and never buy Toro again. I even gave them a chance, but they can't seem to get it together.
Stay away from this junk. Sad to say since my other machine lasted 20 years.

Great Machine
I used it today for the 1st time - we had a 12" snowstorm. This thing ate it up and I did 5 houses in 3.5 hours and I have no complaints whatsoever!! It started up numerous times with one pull each time and threw the snow quite far.

Today I had the first opoirtunity to use my snowblower--Our first snow since the purchase of the snowblower. The machine was properly prepared for use. My problem seems to be that the motor does not generate enough R.P.M. to do the job. We had a 3 inch snow and the machine would throw the snow from the chute a distance of some five feet. When I came to places where the snow had drifted to some five or six inches in depth the machine seemed to stall almost to a halt as the motor almost quit. There is not enough R.P.M. in the motor to do the job. Is there a way to increase the R.P.M. so that there is enough power to "Get the jobdone"?
I doubt that I would be able to do anything if and when we have a 5 or 6 inch snow I shall await your reply as to what to doto bring this up to doing the job as all Toro products seem to do. I have Toro mower and it seems to do the job as intended.
Thanks,
Glennon Ison

Worked well once!
I had the same problem as the prior review... ran it once and then noticed gas fumes and a large puddle of gas under snowblower the next day. I used to love Toro products, now I'm unsure. Caution!

Easy to Use - But Don't Count on Quality or Safety!
An update to my positive review of this blower's features and functionality...
Turns out there is a potentially widespread problem with the carburetor on this machine. After going into my garage a few hours after filling the tank and testing it for use for the upcoming first snow of the year, I was unpleasantly greeted by the smell of gasoline and a sizable spill from a slow leak. I'm not in any way a mechanic but after a bit of inspection and wading around in gasoline, it appeared to be leaking from the carburetor. Sure enough that was it, I took it in for warranty repair at my local Toro dealer and they said "well, we patched it up for now, but don't be surprised if they issue a recall...been hearing a lot about these problems here and out east." Sounds like I'm not the only one who got their blower already experiencing this issue.
Save yourself the headaches I've experienced and buy another brand and product. This machine works well when in use, but expect a puddle of gasoline on your garage floor eventually and a half baked effort to fix it until Toro gets around to a permanent solution to make it right to everyone who spent over $700. Not to mention the extreme fire hazard this presents.
I hope retailers like Snow Blowers Direct and other Toro outlets push the manufacturer to have the issue resolved sooner than later. With the uncertainly in the quality of the fix I was given and the potential danger posed by this problem, I'd give anything to have this piece of garbage out of my garage. Not what I would have expected from a brand like Toro and I can't imagine buying any more of their products.

Great snow blower. It throws snow better than I thought it would.
I almost had to run behind the blower. I've had it since August this year and it starts on the first pull.

Compact power
Got this about 2 weeks ago and have been impressed with the power. Easily throws even heavy snow at least 20-25 feet.
We're just digging out from a pretty good blizzard here in Minneapolis and the only problem I've had is that when the snow plow leaves a pile 2 feet high, it's too much for the 1 foot mouth of of the blower. It doesn't bog down, though, it just can't pull through a drift bigger than it is!
It's got plenty of power to throw even the plowed snow at the end of the driveway. The quick chute is great, too. Saves time and my back.
It starts right up and the 4 cycle engine is noticeably quieter than a 2 cycle. Doesn't pollute as much either. Runs for a good 60-90 minutes on a tank of gas. Agree with other people's comments about the location of the oil fill port - kind of a stupid spot for it.
Overall, extremely happy with my purchase.
SBD RESPONDS: Because the snow drifts you are struggling to clear are so much higher than the auger of your snow blower, we recommend you purchase some drift cutters, which will help take down those high snow drifts.

Two things I definitely recommend purchasing before assembly are fuel stabilizer and a funnel. The oil fill hole is almost parallel to the ground and is located up underneath the housing so filling it straight out of the bottle is not really feasible. At least not without making a big mess. A long narrow funnel makes the fill up fairly easy. Just make sure to put some newspaper or paper towels underneath when you fill it as you are to fill it to the point of overflow.
It starts easy on the first pull. Even my wife can start it (if I let her use it)! The instructions indicate to pull the choke out but that is under the assumption it is cold out when you are trying to start it. The choke is not necessary to start it in nice weather and in fact will probably prevent it from starting. I noticed a lady brought hers back to the hardware store today because it would not start and after the choke was pushed back in it fired right up.
The rubber paddles will do a good job getting down to the cement. Quick shoot is awesome and I don't recommend buying a single stage without it. I tried a two stage last year and found it way too cumbersome for my residential driveway. Unless you have a gravel driveway, a lot of area to plow or receive a lot of snow at a time I would recommend a single stage.
The only disappointment that is neither SBD's or Toro's fault is that both front corners of the housing are cracked and on one of the corners the metal housing is bent in. Obviously this was UPS's fault. I believe they used a clamp on it to move it around as Toro does not use flimsy components so it would take quite a bit of force to cause this type of damage. I did not notice any obvious defects with the box when it arrived to make me think it was damaged on the inside.
I had it delivered at work to avoid it being taken off my doorstep and wasn't there when the UPS guy came. I don't believe it will affect the functionality but it's still disappointing that something you ordered brand new doesn't look brand new. I guess one of the tradeoffs to saving money is the potential for damage like this.
Unit was easy to put together.

Purchase and Setup Excellent !
I am very pleased at the whole process of purchase, shipping and putting the Toro 38588 together.
I talked to a sales rep. on Monday, ordered it online Monday (very easy), received it on Thursday and put it together on Friday (30 min).
When I talked to the sales rep, he told me the unit I was considering used parts that were not reliable or long lasting.
He recommended the Toro because of their great reputation.
When I put the Toro together the instructions were easy to follow and I had no trouble following them.
The Toro started on the first pull !
I have and will continue to recommend SnowBlowers Direct for your Excellent Customer Service, Excellent Products and

Does everything it is supposed to do!
This unit dug me out of the Mid-Atlantic back to back snow storms with no sweat.
Set up was easy, it started on the first pull, and within two minutes had the hang of it.
I did the second half of my drive way in twenty minutes with the blower--the first half had taken 4 back-breaking man-hours of shoveling to do.
I went out and did some neighbor's walks and driveways just so I could change the 2 hour break-in oil.
I never thought snow removal could be so much fun!

This blower was a lifesaver
I ordered this blower to replace my 10 year old machine that bit the dust. It literally arrived on my doorstep the day before the biggest storm to hit the D.C. area since 1899.
In a span of 2 weeks I think it already paid for itself. I purchased this prosumer model as I have a professional home office with many patients coming in.
The machine was quite robust and was able to handle the heavy task of clearing plowed snow from the side street areas for parking.
The design of this machine is very consumer friendly. Starting is easy, and the maneuverability and handling are such that my wife could even use it.
Oil changes are a breeze with this unit, which was not the case with my previous machine. I would highly recommend this model.

Great Service Experience
I just received my new snow throwing, man grunting machine and I can't wait until the next snowfall! Bring it!
I am writing this review for a couple of reasons.
First:
AWESOME SERVICE!! Every time I have spoken to someone at SBD they have been nothing short of true professionals, very courteous and knowledgeable! I happen to be very demanding when it comes to good service - I think everyone should be - and they exceeded my expectations!
Second:
The shipping experience has been wonderful! SBD had my snowblower in my garage in 2 days!! When I received it, i followed the super easy instructions on the minimal steps to get it running and voila!! STARTED ON THE FIRST PULL!!
I'm always wary of ordering items like this online, but this has been a truly great experience! SBD has definitely delivered on their promise.
Once I use my machine a couple of times, I'll write a review on the performance of the machine.

Good Snowblower, Couple Minor Issues
This is my third snowblower, the first was a mid-range two stage (for a big, wide driveway) that was quite problematic; the second was a small single-stage that did the job on what was a much smaller driveway; and now the Toro 421, which I upgraded to to handle my new 300 foot long, slightly uphill, curved driveway with a large parking area at the top.
I used the smaller single stage I had to clear the first snow we got about a month ago, about 10 inches of powdery stuff, with 1.5 foot drifts, and it did the job with some pushing and prodding; so I thought I better get something a bit more powerful and convenient.
OK, so enter the Toro. First I'll say the experience with SBD was pleasant, great site, easy ordering process, fast delivery, and the Toro was intact. Getting it ready for first use was a snap, (you will want to have a funnel handy for the oil, or tilt the machine up a bit to get at it). It started on the first pull, and I was happy. As some other people have said, the engine is a little "rough" running (vibration, sound).
First snowfall came just a day later, only about 2-4 inches of powdery snow, and the Toro went thru it like butter, not throwing very far, but I didn't expect it to with so little snow to push through. It moved fast, I actually had to slow the machine down going downhill, which was fine with me, but might be challenging for an older man or woman.
Second snowfall was about a foot of very heavy, packed snow, which I figured would be a great test for the new blower, and the results were good. I first went at it with about 8 inches on the ground, and most areas took 2 passes to get down to the asphalt, the weight of the machine was just not enough to keep it on the ground. It left about 2-3 inches of heavily packed snow behind it, which it did scrape up on the second pass. Some areas took 3 passes to get clean.
I am not sure if any single stage machine could have handled this snow easily though, probably only a larger, very heavy two-stage could have cut into it completely in one pass.
After the remaining 4-5 inches fell, I went over everything again, and this time, one pass was enough, quick and easy. Again, the blower was really pulling me DOWN the driveway, I have to say it was not easy to control. I'm 6 feet tall, 200 lbs, and can lift 200 lbs over my head, so it's not lack of strength on my part.
As other reviewers mentioned, I got a snow dusting getting kicked back under the machine at my feet, I will have to call Toro and see what they say about it. It was not the biggest deal in the world, but annoying, and if it's not supposed to be happening, then it shouldn't be happening.
The quick chute feature is absolutely TERRIFIC. The chute also never clogged, which actually surprised me a bit given the heaviness of the snow. I sprayed the chute with silicone spray before use, and it worked beautifully.
I'll update this next week- we're supposed to get more snow.

Life saver machine!
This big-little guy arrived just in time for the latest 6-8" snowfall. That doesn't sound like much unless you are 5'2" and already exhausted from the previous 2.5 ft snow. Not to mention that the existing snow piles are over my head at this point!
Picture shows the new 421QR next to its smaller sibling, the Toro 1800. The 1800 works great but we needed more power for all this snow.
This machine started up, first pull, and took over our cleanup. Several of us single females are in love with this guy.

Works great
I just received my new snow blower, and it had a cracked left wheel. The box was a little banged from shipping so I am guessing UPS did that.
I called SBD and they said they would have a new wheel shipped to me. I had to try it anyway. It cleans down to the sidewalk and really moves the snow 20 to 30 feet.
It works great and started on the 2nd pull with the choke pulled out the whole way. After 5 seconds I pushed the choke in and started blowing snow.

Glad I bought this Toro!
I just used this Toro blower for the past 3 days during and after our 3rd major snow storm this season!
A total of 18" fell at my place and it was a breeze keeping my 200' driveway clear of snow with this blower. I ordered this machine online a week ago today (Sunday), received it on Thursday as promised and unpacked it.
After filling it with oil (a little tricky - see below) and gas, it started on the first pull!!! The next day it was put to good use.
I changed the oil, as specified, after the first two hours of running the machine. The oil change was quite simple if you just follow the directions in the owner's manual.
As noted before, the oil fill process can be tricky unless you use a funnel with a tube connected to it. That made the process much easier and did not allow any unwanted spillage.
Lastly, using SnowBlowersDirect.com was easy and simple - I would purchase from them again in the future!

Great buy!
I just used this the 6th time this year. Here in Northeast Ohio, we got hit with snow last night.
This machine has a max height intake of about 12.5". It definitely passes the test on deep snow. I was taking on 12.5" of snow with this machine today, and it threw the 12.5" of snow without a problem and far, too. No clogging problems either.
I had a 16" snow drift in my drive. It took care of this, but of course, I had to take it on in halves though.
It also had no problems with the snow that was left behind by the city plow.
I had replaced my scraper bar because I was having problems with snow blowing back at my feet. This seem to help, but I still have this occurring. I noticed that it only does this when I am clearing light amounts of snow, or like today when I was going over areas of my drive that still had a dusting after I cleared off the heavy stuff.
I do not know why this is, but overall the machine is awesome.
SBD RESPONDS: You may wish to give the Tech Support folks at Toro a call (toll free) at (888) 384-9939. They will be happy to advise you on set-up options for your snow blower.

My husband is the snowblower king and has tried it on frozen, icy, chunky snow, which he says surprisingly did not pose a problem with this TORO model.
It has worked equally as well on deep, powdery snow. He welcomes the four stroke engine versus the two stroke models, which is so much more convenient.
The only concern is that it vibrates a lot. So be prepared for a hand and arm workout. Good luck and enjoy your winters more!

Good one
This snow blower does great. I live out in the country here in Ohio and have had to use this about 5 times so far.
The highest total of snow so far this year was about 6 inches and this blower took care of it with ease. This machine even tackles the snow at the end of my driveway that the city plow leaves behind. I go slow through it but it still gets the job done to where I do not even have to shovel.
The zip deflector is nice because I get lots of wind out here and sometimes it is easy to just go with the wind, but sometimes I have to go against the wind when the wind is blowing all over. During these times, I just lower the zip deflector, which throws the snow at a low angle, which then the wind is not much a factor, so that I do not have a lot of it blowing into my face.
The quick shoot is also good to have. I have not had any problems with clogging either.
As far as the electric start, forget about it. It cost a $100 more. The recoil system is so easy to pull that an older person can do it with ease. It starts with the first pull.
I do wish though it was easier to tell how much fuel you have in it. There is no way of telling how much fuel is in it, even when you take the cap off.
Here is the reason why I gave it a 4 out of 5. I have noticed that mine spits out a dusting of snow here and there at my feet. the Toro company said that this is not normal and I had took it in to get looked at but they said everything checked good. I know some blowers you have to lift up on, but you do not need to on this. And I don't. But for some reason, I get snow that shoots back at my feet. So next time, I use the blower, I'll see what it does, and if it keeps doing this. Then I'll have to ask the Toro company what to do next.
Has anyone else reading this have this problem with this model? Overall, good machine.
SBD RESPONSE: Dan, sounds like you simply need to adjust the scraper bar at the bottom of the snow blower. Check out our video on how to do on our YouTube channel. Take care.

Good luck changing the oil
This snow blower is great until you have to change the oil.
You have to be a magician in order to change the oil without spilling half of it.

Excellent Buy, Easy to Use
I'm surprised there are no reviews posted yet for this blower. I've used it twice now, and what a fantastic machine.
1. Incredibly fast processing and shipping by SnowBlowersDirect.com. I ordered on a Wednesday night and had my blower by the end of next business day. Brilliant. Not to mention your savings on sales tax and inclusion of shipping in the price keeps it simple to buy.
Try purchasing something like this online from one of the big box outlets and you'll be surprised how it all adds up once you get to checkout. Or, this time of year, try finding one in stock at your local big box store or power equipment dealer.
2. Easy out of the box. My only complaint in assembly is the 20 oz. oil bottle included is too much to fill, despite contrary statements in the Owner's Manual. I used most of the bottle when filling the engine for the first time, but then had to drain a substantial amount after filling.
When the instruction manual says "20 oz. max fill," you would assume someone at Toro would have checked that out for accuracy before print. It's probably more along the lines of 10 oz. before you're spilling out of the nearly horizontal oil fill spout.
3. Unless you are elderly or have a disability, there is absolutely no need for the extra $'s for the electric start 421QE. The first time I started my 421QR, it started immediately...absolutely no problems or strain. And the pull was very easy...save it or spend your $100+ elsewhere.
Coming from my last old school giant two-stage that went belly up a few years ago, this was an amazing upgrade in ease of use and functionality.
4. Belts get right down to pavement (used on concrete driveway & sidewalk). Even does an admirable job of pulling up matted tire and foot tracks.
5. While not technically self-propelled, it sure moves with ease and pulls itself along, throwing farther the faster you're able to go.
6. Throwing capability for even heavy snow and ice is excellent for a single stage blower. I was impressed by my neighbor's Honda single-stage until I got the 421QR up and running.
I've discovered first hand why the Power Clear series is so highly rated by users and experts alike. Bring on the snow!
