Unpaved Surface Areas
Those in Glass Houses Shouldn't Throw Stones
If you have a gravel driveway, you need a two-stage snow blower with an adjustable clearing height.
Two-stage snow blowers basically throw the snow twice. The main auger lifts the snow into a spinning impeller, which discharges the snow up to 45 feet.
The auger doesn't contact the clearing surface. As a result, it doesn't throw gravel or small stones.
Most two-stage gas snow blowers have 4 cycle winterized engines, so you don't have to mix gas and oil. They are also designed to cut through snow over 8 inches.
However, the biggest difference between two-stage models is the "clearing width". The wider the snow blower, the faster it will clear the surface area.
If price isn't an issue, you simply buy the widest snow blower possible. Unfortunately, most of us aren't that fortunate.
Big two-stage snow blowers come equipped with big price tags. After all, it takes an extremely powerful (and expensive) engine to toss large quantities of snow.
If price is a concern, your next best option is to match your snow blower with your surface area. The larger your surface, the larger the snow blower you will need.
