Winter 2016 Forecast

For the last 195 years, the Farmers' Almanac has been forecasting the weather with amazing accuracy.

So what does this winter have in store for us? Well, that entirely depends on where you live.

Farmers' Almanac forecasts are usually approximately 80% accurate, putting ordinary meteorologists to shame.

Last year was confusing to say the least. At times, weather would be unseasonably warm, and at other times it would be frigid cold. Old Man Winter was riddled with indecisiveness during the 2015-16 winter season, and it was hard to adjust with the fluctuations. But you aren't interested in last year, right? Let's get to this year's winter weather outlook.

United States Winter Outlook 2016-17
If you're living in the Northeast, Great Lakes or the Midwest, you'll be seeing some cold and snowy conditions as early as mid-November.

However, before you start hanging blankets over the windows and pulling out the space heaters, know that the numbing cold weather that freezes your lips together won't arrive until much later, around February. In some of the northern tier states, you may see outdoor temperatures drop to as low as 40-below during this time.

Big Snowfall Prediction
Mid-February, 16-19, a strong winter storm will be dropping lots of snow over the Tennessee Valley near the Virginia Capes. Throughout these areas, as well as western North Carolina, the Virginias, Maryland, Delaware, and parts of southern New England, the snow may accumulate to as much as 1-2 feet.

The entire East Coast will get buried in snow through the winter. If you don't already have one, this will be a great time to start shopping snow blowers so you're not stuck shoveling your way out.

Unlike the plethora of snow projected to fall along the east coast, the Midwest is expected to receive average to below-average snowfall - nothing exceptional. The western states are expected to experience heavy precipitation, effectively sandwiching the Midwest between a snowstorm and a cold rainstorm. If you live in the Midwest, you can probably expect things to get messy.

Canadian Winter Outlook 2016-17
This winter, Canada will experience some harsh weather, with the eastern three-quarters of the country experiencing extreme cold as low as 40-below. Parts of Nova Scotia will be hit with a heavy snowstorm and strong winds in mid to late February, leaving up to 30 cm of accumulation.

Whether in the U.S. or Canada, you'll be seeing some messy cold weather coming this year. If you live in an area predicted to get a lot of snow this winter, consider investing in a snow thrower. Those who are older or have a heart condition should avoid shoveling, and a quality snow thrower will help you get out of your house without risking preventable health emergencies.
