  6 Questions
Q: I have been looking at ST30 DLE 414cc and ST# DLE 342cc. Which one is better? Looks like prices are the same $1,599.99.

by Toshimi Shimizu from Minnesota on August 28, 2013

A: Toshimi,

The real difference is in the engine manufacturer and size. Briggs and Stratton has a much longer proven track record. LCT has not been around as long but I am not aware of any problems with their engines either. There is a minor difference in tire size as well.

921029 414cc - Ariens engine made by LCT, engine size 414cc, tires 16x5

921018 342cc - Briggs and Stratton engine size 342cc, tires 15x5

Q: What does it mean by a two stage snow blower compare to a single stage one?
by Dave Y from Connecticut on February 09, 2013

A: Dave - In very basic terms, single-stage snow blowers only throw the
snow once. A gas-powered engine spins an auger that scoops up the snow and throws it out the chute. Two-stage snow blowers, on the other hand, throw the
snow twice. First, a metal auger scoops up the snow and ice. Then, a high-speed impeller throws it out through the discharge chute.

Q: Does this have the unlock/lock hub?
by David from Massachusetts on March 01, 2012

A: This unit would not, it uses what Ariens calls auto traction drive. The snow blower would automatically slow one wheel while the other stays power in order to turn. It would be about the same type of option as the trigger system you would find on other snow blowers, but Ariens does not use triggers.
by Robert, Product Expert

Q: I have a moderate slope to paved drive and 200 feet of gravel after that. Would I be better off w tracked version? Thx
by Ralph from Michigan on September 28, 2011

A: If it is a moderate slope, you would most likely be fine with wheels, but this is more like a touch and feel sort of thing. If you can get slippery conditions you can have issues with traction if the slope is too steep, but if it is gradual you would most likely be fine.

Q: The Ariens Platinum ST30DLE (30") 342cc Two-Stage Snow Blower specs states that the gear case is cast iron but if you click on the product demo it states that the gear case is aluminum.
Question: Which is it?

by David Marteny from Virginia on August 28, 2011

A: David - the product demo's on our web site are from 2010. Ariens is building all of their 2011 2-stage models with the heavy-duty cast iron gear case. The ST30DLE has a cast iron gear case.
by Robert, Product Expert

Q: how well will this unit work on a steep gravel drieway. Ariens Platinum ST30DLE. Thank you.
by Jerry Bartle from North Carolina on August 06, 2011

A: This is going to depend on how slippery it is going to get. Wheeled units are great on level ground, but when you start to get steep slopes, you will start to run into a loss of traction and the wheels will just spin. Now the answer typically to slippage is chains, but with new Ariens models, the wheels have deep tread and the chains just sit inbetween the tread and don't really work.

Excellent Snowthrower
This is a very good machine.- it has a big engine.

The negatives are that it's tricky to set up and get the chute connected properly. It took about 2 hours and a degree of being handy.

It's also like driving a stick shift, with lots of things to adjust such as snow throw height and speed, etc. You will find yourself looking at the panel a lot. Another con is that it's very heavy- I would guess 150 pounds. It is self propelled but you want to pull it back sometimes because it's faster... more
Pros: I'd Buy It Again, High Quality, Fast, Easy To Store

We bought this to replace our 10 year old big box store, which has given years of trouble free service. After reading all the great reviews I bought the Platinum 30. We live up in the mountain of Yosemite and have to snow blow maybe 10 times a winter.
We have a long driveway which tends to have some gravel rocks on it.
The quality looks great and it started first pull out of the crate. It runs strong and mows right through our deep wet Sierra Snow. The hand warmers are a big... more

Nom Nom Nom
I bought this in Aug 2012 to replace an ancient 24" Ariens snow blower that more than delivered on quality over the years. Now being March 2013, it's gotten plenty of use here in North Eastern Massachusetts. With a blizzard (36" of snow) and a few storms of 20"-24", it just kept going and going. It had no problem handling a full load of snow, both light & fluffy and wet & heavy. Only drawback was that with the 21" height, and 36" of snow, some goes over the... more

Time Saver
I am the Maintenance Supervisor of a church and we use this to clear all of our sidewalks. I was using a John Deere 724 before and now moved up to this 30'' Ariens. I am very impresed, the engine is the same as John Deere and Toro, all Briggs engines. So why pay more for a name and not get the options. This snow blower has everything you need to clear lots of snow. I just cleared over 1000' of sidewalks with 7" of wet snow and no problems. This will really throw the snow too. The... more

Outstanding Machine
I purchased this snow blower last summer on sale. Been sitting in the garage idle until a few weeks ago, but then we received a good 20 inch storm. It started on the first crank and off I went. It plowed right through with no drop in engine power. It was very cold and the snow was light and fluffy. It blew the snow at least 50 feet out of the way. Since then I have used it to clear 3 more storms. The snow was higher in moisture and much heavier still plenty of power to move it, but only threw... more

Bring On The Snow!!
So far, so good- all I need is snow. I just got the snow blower yesterday, put gas in oil in it, and it fired right up with the electric start immediately.

I was really surprised at how quiet it was at full throttle. I can't wait to blow snow, this machine seems very solid.

Snow Blowers Direct was very easy to order from. I placed the order on Thursday and I had it on Monday.

One Of My Best Buys
The machine with a 16.5 Briggs & Stratton I/C engine really throws snow. The machine starts on first pull just like a Honda or Kawasaki engine. The price was well below cost of the local Mega Hardware chains. Was delivered curbside professionally and without any issues. Assembly was not difficult. I've used family member machines such as MTD and Troy Built and this continues to be my choice if machines to use.
Pros: High Quality, Easy To Use, Price, Fast

Difficult On Pull Start.
Even though I have the electric start in the event I need to pull start the cord/rope is exceedingly long. More so than other pull starts I had in the past.
Pros: Quiet, Price, Exceeded Expectations, High Quality
Cons: Difficult To Use

No Comparison
Well, after Superstorm Sandy we were greeted with a Nor'easter that dumped 8" of heavy wet snow.

The Ariens platinum 30" started first pull, it was easy to operate, and the hand warmers were great, since I forgot my gloves.

The only problem I had was it needs weight on the front to hold it down, but that was probably because of how heavy the snow was.

I would highly recommend this snow blower- and I'm not commenting on what it replaced, because there is no comparison.

Excellent Machine
This is one good machine. In this day of mediocrity (or often times less), it is nice to find a well made, solid machine that actually works the way it is supposed to work. Other than a couple nuts that vibrated loose from operation (easily fixed with some blue loctite), and the possible slight exaggeration of "throws snow 50 feet" (we observed 40 feet), this is a keeper. Since I recently had rotator cuff surgery, I decided to buy a good snow blower that my wife could operate. My... more

This Thing Is A Beast!
This snow blower came in a crate and was in excellent condition upon arrival. Shipping was fast too. Assembly was not difficult as long as you read through the instructions fully first.

We've had a few medium snow falls of 6 to 7 inches, so we haven't really tested it on the deep stuff yet, but it throws snow 50 feet in any trajectory you want with ease.

It is also easy to maneuver after a small learning just takes a minute to get used to all of the controls. The heated... more
